The Thread for College Interviews

That makes sense. Thanks.

Again, should I call him or just e-mail him?

Also, is it too forward for me to ask directly if I can dress casually?

I recently volunteered to be an alum interviewer for a Boston area University. I don’t know if this is true elsewhere, but for my school we receive an applicant’s name and contact information only. Our goal is to fill in some of the intangibles for the admissions staff – things that might not surface through scores, grades, or essays. My role isn’t to ask where else you’ve applied, to make evaluations about the school or you, but to help round out the picture for the admissions committee, to answer the question what kind of a student/person is this? What makes this person tick? My report uses descriptive adjectives like “confident, nervous, comfortable, shy, outgoing, articulate, interesting, engaged, scattered, committed” This shouldn’t make you nervous, like you need to play a “role”, it should make you excited because all you have to do is be YOURSELF. Do put your best foot forward (remember to be polite, try to drop the “likes” “you knows” “whatevers”, relax), but don’t obsess about the experience.

The question EVERYONE should prepared to answer is “Why should we pick you?” or “What makes you different from everyone else?” If you can answer these questions, you should be fine.

does anyone have any advice about what to ask the interviewer about the college?

I need to prepare for my MIT interview..what would be the best preparation? recall physics formula perhaps?

@jimi7, no need to do that. I had my MIT interview recently and my interviewer said that he was there to provide MIT with the “human factor” of the applicant. Engage in a conversation and don’t wait for him to ask questions or else you’re going to have awkward pauses. Talk about your leadership roles and your passions not about academics. Also research about your major, the coursework, the staff, and opportunities in that major (research, volunteering, clubs, etc)

Any interviews from Brown University or Cornell University?

Thanks Andromeda..it’s just that I’m not so familiar with this. I guess I had to be more human then..haha..socialise!!

Is it okay to go into an interview with a list of questions in a notebook, or is it better to have everything memorized?

You’re going to be stressed and distracted, so bring your questions in a notebook. As an interviewer, I even write down questions so I don’t get distracted and forget to ask about some important things.

I had my RD Brown interview a few weeks ago and it went pretty well, much to my surprise! It was more like a conversation than aything else, though it was kind of odd to hear him classify Cornell as his “safety school” back in the day. Ah, well, at least its over!

Why did my interviewer send me a sheet wanting all my test scores (even PSAT!)???

Also, if she wants to meet at a Starbucks, is that a good indicator that it’s casual?

Oh okay, thanks IvanKaramozov! Do you have any advice? If so please PM me thanks!

Hahaha so sorry if this is awkward, but I always have trouble with eye contract during a one on one conversation. Actually, its no problem at all, until I start thinking about it. then I’m like “should I be looking at their eyes, wait I don’t want to stare into their eyes, shoot I haven’t made enough eye contact, just don’t look anywhere near her chest”. yeaaaaah.

So any advice?

^ppl say to look at the persons nose lol. i don’t know if thats any help

Also, does anyone know if we will still get interviews if we submitted on the final due date (like jan. 1st for schools that had applications due jan. 1st)

^^ha, i know exactly what you mean, it does get akward just staring just staring at someone, and it is worse when it is a women because if i look away i dont want them to think i am looking somewhere i shouldnt be, ha.
^for my interview (which was optional though) i had to submit a request by Dec 1st, submit the application by Jan 1st, and have my interview by Jan 30th

i was also wondering what is the dress code for an alumni interview? i am doing one for College of the Holy Cross, and i am a male. would be like a suit, khaki or black pants with a nice shirt? i was thinking of wearing khakis, decent shoes (not dress but not casual), and a nice sweater with a button up. i’m not really worried about the interview, i just want to make sure i make a good impression. also how formal are interviews? we are meeting at panera so it cant be that formal.

If an interview is being held at starbucks, am I suppose to order something? I feel like it would awkward either way.

It’s polite to order something if you’re sitting there. Ordering a drink perhaps will make it less awkward - you’ll have something to do with your hands and you can fill any pauses with drinking.

You don’t have to order something. It may just get in the way and make you even more nervous if you spill it.

can someone answer my question about what is appropriate to wear? ^^^
