The Thread for College Interviews

cross: you’re fine. Unless the interview takes place in a law office or professional bank building, you’re good.

I had my F&M interview in early October which went very well and two months later I got a letter saying I had been accepted via Early Decision.

My interview takes place at Starbucks… I plan to getting there at least 20 mins early so I can get drinks for myself ahead of time… Since it’s really cold, do I have to offer something to the interviewer? I don’t mind buying

when is the latest you might get an interview from either cornell or johns hopkins?

connor: in an interview setting or another business/professional setting, if you are the junior (clearly so in this case) there’s no need for you to offer to buy your senior a beverage. Frankly it falls to the senior to offer the junior a refreshment. Buy yourself one, relax. Try to be in a quieter corner of the cafe.

satcrzy: you’re better off asking in the JHU and cornell fora, no?

I’ve interviewed with representatives from Agnes Scott, Smith, and Maryville.

The Agnes Scott interview was reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition; the representative pounded me with difficult, oddly-phrased questions and wrote down every word that I said in response. I made some mistakes (talked too loud, accidentally called myself a “genius”), but I was accepted to the school EA anyway.

I did the Smith interview over the phone last night. The alumna was quite chatty and it was hard to get a word in edgewise, but I feel that I was able to convey what I needed to convey about my special academic circumstances. At the end, my interviewer went over what she was going to tell Smith admissions about me, and it was quite flattering fingers crossed

I did an on-campus interview at Maryville. My interviewer was more interested in giving information about the school than grilling me. I was the one asking the questions. It was fun and felt like a normal conversation.

^^^ Congrats on the interviews! Glad they went well.

My first interview is at a hotel tomorrow. What should I wear? Are nice pants/shirt okay? What kind of shoes should I wear?
Thanks!

I interviewed for Duke today. It went really well I think  It was only about 30 to 35 mins tho

I had an alumna interview for Mount Holyoke today. It was wonderful. I met her in her apartment on Park Avenue in NYC, so it was really nice. There was even an elevator operator. Anyways, it was really informal. We just sat on the couch and talked about my high school, how many people go to selective colleges, why I want to go to a women’s college, differences between Smith and Mount Holyoke, etc. It was relaxing, too. I think she liked me, too. After all, she told me to keep her posted on where I get in and where I end up, and is confident that I’ll do well wherever I go. =)

I enjoyed how she had nice comments about other colleges that she visited (she attended Dartmouth in an exchange program for her Junior year, and enjoyed it, but liked MHC more).

woooooooooot! holy cross applicant. not too many of us on this board.

anyway i had a senior interview on campus like two months ago. well im a girl so i just kinda wore dress pants and a nice blouse. but your outfit seems pretty normal. be sure to order something. ahhhhhh i kinda wish i had alumni interviews they seem kinda fun, all mine were on campus!

^thanks! ha, i am glad i looked just now because i am about to leave in like 10 minutes.

I’ve got an interview with a Penn alum next week, and we’re meeting at her office, which happens to be a law firm in the city. Should I still stick with khakis and a blouse or try to go fancier? I dunno what she’ll be wearing. What do lawyers in offices wear, anyways?

Lawyers were very conservative business attire. You could go as stated or upscale to more business attire. Neither would be out of place.

Your khaki/blouse would not be held against you I should think. You’re a HS student, not an applicant to be a summer intern at the firm.

I just came back from my Princeton interview!!

My interviewer was very friendly and easy-going. I immediately felt comfortable in her presence. We were both dressed casually, upon her request via email.

We started talking about the restaurant we were at and I almost forgot that it was an interview. She treated me to a delicious appetizer as we sipped iced water in a little booth. It didn’t feel like an interview; more like a conversation. I guess I had been worrying over nothing! She asked me about what I’ve done at high school, during my summers, etc. (didn’t ask anything like “why princeton?” etc.) She also asked what other colleges I applied to, what I’m “most proud of,” and what I want to major in or do in the future.

Then she told me about her experiences at Princeton, and how it led to her current career (that she loves!). It was very interesting! Time sped by (~1 hr) and before I knew it, she was paying the bill and walking me out of the restaurant. Outside, she waited for my mom to arrive before leaving in her car. I left the interview feeling light and happy.

I hope everyone else’s interviews go smoothly as well!

^ I’m having my Princeton interview today. Hopefully my guy will be as friendly as your interviewer was. Besides, we are going to meet at a caf

Ok, thanks. I just didn’t wanna feel underdressed if everyone else was gonna be walking about wearing suits.

I hope my interviewer goes as awesomely as the Princeton one two posts above me. Wish me luck!

@stefanm: Good luck with the interview; let us know how it went!

@oreorulez12: Good luck!

I had my first interview with an alumni from Pomona College. He was really chilled about things. We just discussed about my school and extracurricular activities. He was just a really fun guy to talk to.

Overall, Pomona interviews are very carefree. And you didn’t even have to dress “professionally.” Dress casual and be yourself.

I’ll be having my Princeton Interview soon…and I think it’s in like a law firm or something…
It seems..awkward ;s Anything in particular I should know if I’m having an interview in a formal place like that?
