My child has Syracuse University skype interview scheduled. She’s really nervous because it’s her first interview and she really wants to go to SU. Can anyone tell me what their interview was like, questions, suggestions etc? so I can help put her at ease?
Sooo… what questions should I ask/not ask as an interviewer? Anything you would like to see an interviewer do?
There are some threads with good questions for interviewers. What does your alma mater say? To me, anything goes except trying to pin down where else the student has applied, SAT/ACT and GPA (although some colleges don’t mind alum interviewers asking these: mine does object)
My interview is in 2 days and I just thought of a question. We are scheduled to meet at a local Starbucks. How are we going to recognize each other? I don’t know how he looks and I don’t think he knows what I look like. Help please!
For my first interview, I sent my interviewer an email and asked her if I should meet her outside on the patio or inside of the coffee shop and just slipped in the line “I will be wearing a green jacket so I should be pretty easy to spot”. She replied that morning and told me what she will be wearing and gave me her phone number.
For my second interview, my interviewer gave me her phone number from the start so I wasn’t worried. It was 10:00 am Sunday morning at starbucks and I am seriously the only high schooler in the store so she approached me right away.
Trust me, you’ll be instantly recognizable – the person walking up to the cafe, dressed nicely with his/her neck on a swivel looking around nervously and hoping to make eye contact with the interviewer. I’ve NEVER missed spotting the student in 20+ years. Also, if when I arrive, I quickly scan the tables for HS age students eying the door.
Literally, it takes 3 seconds to connect. Never fails. You’ll be fine.
What is the difference between a college interview and an information session? I’ve been to an interview with an alumni but now have this “information session” next week which is specifically not a college interview.
It’s for people who want to learn more about the college to decide whether or not to apply. Not for you. For soph and juniors
Have her interview- it is one way the college measures ‘level of interest’-
A meeting at Starbucks, rest assured we can recognize each other?
Also, how does it work, will we have to buy drinks, separately? Wouldn’t it be awkward to stand in line to buy a drink or should I buy mine’s first?

Just had my Yale interview at Starbucks. The place was busy, but a comfortable setting nonetheless. I brought my CV and some pictures taken of me dancing (my main EC) at an important recital. The interview was very conversational and after the initial 5 mins of him asking about me, I asked away about the opportunities at Yale for a good 45 mins. This shouldn’t be called an interview, more like a “Clear your doubts” session
I had my Yale interview and my MIT Interview. Both went fine, I had some videos/pictures of research projects to show them, I think they liked it. Just be yourself. If you’re a good match for the school, you’re likely to have things in common with the interviewer (I had a loooot of things in common, that was really funny, good thing I had my phone w/ pictures to show them that I wasn’t telling them ******** when I talked about how I traveled to Japan or Indonesia… Both had actually lived in Japan and loved the country so much)
Out of curiosity, I’ve seen some interviewers earlier in this thread saying that they had caught student lying. How exactly do you caught them ? Like you tell them “Man, you’re out” or you just write on the report ?
are interviews essential for princeton??
Interviews are technically not ‘essential’ (have little if any real effect) for any school. You won’t get penalized if you’re never offered an interview, although if you’re offered one you really should take it. They officially say that you can turn it down without any harm, however I wouldn’t risk it. It may be shown to the adcoms that you chose not to accept the interview (although I’m not sure). I have my Princeton alumni interview tomorrow. Watch my interviewer ■■■■■ me so hard. Gonna get grilled >_>
Regarding Princeton interview – for some humor go to you tube and search “fresh prince princeton interview” Will Smith’s character gets an on the spot acceptance even though he didn’t apply. LOL
I just found this really amazing blog that gives tips about college interviews as well as tells you some common questions from individual schools (Ivy and top 10, mostly).

Guys, Important question.
My Carnegie Mellon interview for computer engineering is up in a few days. I was wondering, that just in case, if the topic comes up, is it fine to say that I would rather go to MIT?
For eg, interviewer asks, “If given an option, would you choose MIT or CMU?”
If I say CMU, wouldn’t he catch the lie, because I can’t think of any reason why CMU is better than MIT. Although I think saying CMU is a better idea, I can’t think of any way I will be able to justify it. So is it fine to say MIT?
No. Do some research and figure out an answer. There are plenty of reasons to go to CMU over MIT.
@garggaurav:
No. Unless you want to get rejected.
Had my Harvey Mudd interview. So chill; loved it!
