The Trouble With College Finances

It is pretty common for posters here to say that high school counselors say nothing about cost and financial aid when advising students about college applications. Understandably, there may be reluctance to go anywhere near families’ private financial affairs.

But the least they can do while staying away from families’ private financial affairs is to tell students (before they make their application lists):

  1. "Talk to your parents about college costs and what they will contribute, so that you know your budget."
  2. "You and your parents should use the net price calculator on each college's web site to get an idea of what financial aid at that college may look like."
