They all sound good but The Great Believers and the Hearts Invisible Furies are not in our library system so that would be bottom for me. Little Fires Everywhere I would be 1243 on the wait list.
Ha, I’m up for anything except the Philip Roth and also thought The Imortalists sounded interesting. I’d rather not read 700+ pages!
The immortalists would be my top choice and the The Great Believers my least favorite. I’m ok with any of the other 3 but it could be the end of the year before I get Little Fires Everywhere from the library.
I’m open.
None of the books are available in our library system. The easiest to purchase used are Hearts Invisible Furies and the Immortalists. Either of those would be great.
^@silverlady - can you get e books ? I downloaded the Immortalist yesterday from library
I really, really dislike e books. I am a purist. My DH has a Kindle, but I could never get into it. If my vision ever gets terrible, I might change my mind, but I really don’t think I will.
I would read any of these 5. Most interested in:
- *The Heart's Invisible Furies*
- *Little Fires Everywhere*
- *The Female Persuasion*
Thanks, everyone!
Anyone with a head for advanced calculus has probably already ascertained that the winner is The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin. The book appeared on eight out of ten of the above lists and was in the #1 spot on four of those.
Almost everyone else who didn’t list the book specifically (or didn’t rank at all) indicated that they would be happy with any of the finalists. I am hoping that is also the case with @Caraid. History has proven her to be game for almost anything, so I think we’re good.
I’m looking forward to the book! I’ll start a new thread. @SouthJerseyChessMom, don’t read your ebook too fast – discussion doesn’t start until October 1st.
So goodbye to Samuel Hawley for now. Like @Mary13 I can see myself spending time with him again at some point.
Thank you, one and all, for a good discussion - and, of course, @Mary13 for being our intrepid leader. I needed the step into Samuel Hawley’s twelve lives and out of mine for a while.
So what books do you plan to read next, i.e. your bedside table books?
Currently reading
Star of the North: Thriller set in North Korea. I only have about 25 pages left to read.
The Dream Thieves: YA supernatural. The Raven Cycle #2.
Righteous - Joe Ide: IQ #2. Mystery. I finished IQ last night and started Righteous today.
and I’m also reading through the graphic novel series Y: The Last Man.
I’m in three real life book clubs, so I have a stack waiting for me:
Book Club #1
August - Realistic fiction: The Book of Polly. I need to start this one ASAP.
September - Fairytales or fairytale retelling: All the Ever Afters: The Untold Story of Cinderella’s Stepmother.
Book Club #2:
August: *IQ/i
September: Burial Rites
October: Bluebird, Bluebird. This one is the 2018 Gulf Coast Reads http://www.gulfcoastreads.org/about
Book Club #3 meets every six weeks and chooses two books:
September: *The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley/i ) and *Little Fires Everywhere/i
October: Bluebird, Bluebird will be one of the two books, overlapping with other book clubs
Listed like this it looks daunting but really it’s spread over 2-3 months, so it’s doable.
Want to read:
She Rides Shotgun - because I’m still in a Samuel Hawley reading frame of mind.
Wow, @ignatius, that is impressive! I definitely found the right group to push me along in my reading!!
I’ve recently read a David Baldacci book called The Innocent, which is about a hitman for the US government…with a heart. I guess I can’t shake Samuel Hawley, either.
Now reading The Shadow of the Wind and then in mid Sept I’ll turn my attention to The Immortalists.
Thank you, @Mary13 and everyone, for your guidance and participation…I’ve gotten a lot more out of the book than I would have otherwise. Enjoy the rest of the summer!!
^@ignatius super reading lists, always interesting to see what people enjoy.
Will be interesting to hear how your real life book club likes The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley. As much as In
Ike’s the book, I hesitate to recommend to my friend for her book club, based on mixed reviews here.
I started my first Sue Grafton book- U is for Undertow, but started the Immortalist so not sure if I’ll get to the Grafton.
I don’t play the field. I’m a one book club kind of gal, and this is it.
Right now, I’m reading We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. Next up will be Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. I generally don’t read fantasy, but I like fairy tales and my daughter gave me the book for Mother’s Day.
I’m happy to read The Immortalists, @Mary13. It is always good for me to read outside my box. Thanks for the Samuel Hawley discussion everyone. It added a lot more depth to the book. I appreciate all the insight. I know I disappeared for a few days. I was out of state for a wedding. I don’t know if I travel a lot or if it is just coincidence, but it seems like I often go out of town during these discussions.
@ignatius, impressive reading list! I don’t know how you can read so many books at one time. I would definitely start merging stories and characters!
I usually listen to books while I walk the dog. But, I’m swamped with work and it’s been hot, so dog walks have been very, very short.
I have an impressive (lol) amount of books in queue at Audible — and it will take me forever to get around to any of them at this rate!
Next up will be Eleanor Oliphant, The Warmth of Other Suns, or My Ex-Life. I haven’t decided which one yet. When I get stressed out, I like to re-listen to parts of Why Buddhism is True.
I have no books that I’m reading currently. Hawley took a lot out of me and I was already exhausted after finishing the last of the 10 volume fantasy epic by Steven Eriksen in July. Next up in the fantasy genre — I’m deciding between reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson or revisiting an old favorite The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.
I will be getting an old favorite A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle(rereading because he died in January of this year) from the library along with Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, both planned for later this month.
The library now has e-book versions of some of Tess Gerritsen’s earlier books that I had missed so I will start catching up with those this week.
Lol, thanks for sticking with us! I’m glad that The Immortalists was your top choice – maybe the next round will be an improvement.
As I mentioned, I just finished The Female Persuasion, which I enjoyed greatly. I also just finished Mrs. and do not recommend it at all. In the middle of re-reading *Everything Happens for a Reason, and Other Lies I’ve Loved/i and am finding it very meaningful. DH and I are going to Italy for a week, in a week, and I’ll probably just put some junk on my Kindle.
@Midwest67: One of my book clubs recently read and discussed Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Most liked it. It started slow for me but I ended up really liking it.
@Mary13: I have Spinning Silver on hold at the library. It might be awhile before it comes in though. If you like fairytales, you might look into All the Ever Afters: The Untold Story of Cinderella’s Stepmother. My librarian daughter recommended it: she gave it five stars on Goodreads.
@Mary13.
I chose We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves for my book club last year. It wasn’t the liveliest of our sessions, but we did manage to find enough to discuss. I love my group, and though I’d be happy to join a second, I’ve heard that too many fulfill the “drink wine, complain about kids, barely mention the book” stereotype, so I’m leery of branching out.
