The UC GPA calculations and how are they used in the application process?

This may be a dumb question, but it would put my nerves at rest… Is French 7-8 one yearlong class or two? Because of the block schedule, we only get 8 classes a year, but almost all of our classes are Biology 1-2, Honors English 1-2, Integrated Math III-IV, etc. You make a point of saying “2023 Number of YEARLONG a-g courses” but our one-year courses (eg. French 1) are taken in one quarter for 1:40 minutes M-F. Just trying to figure out if D24 took 40 a-g or 24 a-g.

To me the way your HS’s block schedule works , French 7-8 looks like it is probably a yearlong class for a-g. Does French 7-8 equate to French level 4?

I do not make the Yearlong distinction, it is the UC’s that make that distinction on their statistical data.

Students are evaluated within the context of their HS and the classes offered so the data presented is just informational showing that going beyond the minimum a-g course requirements is expected to be competitive. AO’s are aware there are limitations due to different HS curriculums.

To clarify … For my D24’s high school ASB is called Leadership and is on the UC approved list of a-g courses under “g” or electives…. Perhaps it is for your HS as well?

So, my D did get a-g credit for that, but perhaps in terms of rigor it doesn’t bode as well as say taking more “g” electives that are considered academic? Not sure on that, but my daughter learned and did so much in those 2 years of leadership and it was a major part of her growth and high school experience so wouldn’t change a thing there.

I think that you might be right about them not wanting to remove in case that decide to add them. One of those that I noticed has not been taught in at least five years.

The admins of each HS course lists are required to do an annual review:
https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/guide/update-your-a-g-list/annual-a-g-update-checklist/
The last step in this is to remove (archive) courses that will not be taught in the upcoming academic year. So, either they are not entering that information correctly, or it is being displayed incorrect.

I really don’t think that the UC AO’s have the time to check why kids are missing courses in their major that are noted on their HS list.

I would be curious to know how many others also see courses listed that are not offered by their schools.

UCLA’s admission website (FAQ on right side) says

Of course, a strong academic performance combined with sustained, meaningful involvement in extracurricular activities is the ideal. But if it comes down to a choice between excelling in your coursework or your extracurricular activities, choose your academics.

I could be wrong, but my understanding was once a course is approved, they add and remove it without having to go through approval again. My understanding is that the A-G course list should be updated by the school every year. If not, why would they listed the approved courses by year?

Leadership is not an extracurricular at our school.

If you can still access their UC application it will show the number of a-g years. Leadership as a G course will not be a negative at all, as long as the other categories are met.

Even if they never removed a course, they would still have to list approved courses by year, because when new courses are approved, they are only approved starting that year.

But I agree, they really SHOULD also prune the list to remove old courses.

Several years ago, I noticed a problem in the way that one of the courses at our HS was listed. I told a HS administrator and it was fixed on the A-G course list within a couple of weeks. That makes me think that it isn’t all that difficult to update the course list.

How do we compute the UC GPA ? is there a tool or calculator to use ? thanks,

Thanks for sharing. And we should only include courses from summer after 9th through summer after 11th for UC GPA right ? thanks,

Correct.

Are you a CA HS student? If so, you can look up your HS’s a-g courses here and also which courses will get the extra Honors point in the calculation.

Also, Does PE grades in 10th count for UC GPA ? thanks,

No, PE does not count.

Thanks, you have been super helpful. Sorry for one more question. If the student takes a college course in a given semester, it shows up on the transcript as 10 units. Should we count that course and grade twice in the GPA calculator (since the school is semester based) ? thanks

Was it a semester course or a yearlong course? 1 grade or 2 grades?

Usually 1 semester college course equals 1 yearlong HS course but you report it as a semester course with 1 grade in the college section of the UC application and it gets 1 Honors point in the calculation.

It was a semester long course. For example. Intro to Psychology in an community college course - It was semester long course. On the transcript, it says the Grade is A (for example), but shows up as 10 units. So the question is - should we consider this as a two courses, one for each semester for the GPA calculation, and use 2 A’s ? or just enter as 1 course with A, and add additional 1 point for a college course.
