Okay so I’m a girl from West Virginia who has been wanting to go UNC since who knows how long. I’m currently a junior. I’m on the robotics team, have been playing lacrosse since 7th grade (they start lacrosse here in 6th grade and I didn’t hear about it till 7th grade), I’ve been performing at this event every year since 6th grade, I’m very involved in model un (I’ve been doing it since freshman year and even went to the state model un sophomore year), I’m doing YG this year, and I volunteer at the nursing home on a daily basis. I currently have a 3.609 GPA. I still haven’t taken the SATs or the ACTs but I’m doing those after my AP tests. My classes this year include AP Calc AB, AP English Lang, AP Environmental Science, AP US history, Spanish 4, and Physics. I plan on taking AP bio, Calc BC, and AP physics senior year. How good are my chances? What should I do to improve my chances?

UNC CH has a mandate to educate the best students from North Carolina. For out of state applicants, it’s as competitive as an Ivy or any top 10 LAC. So your odds are very, very low not to say impossible. If you can afford the application fees, you should send an application as soon as you can then forget about it and focus on a “realistic” list, with 2 safeties (colleges you like and you’re 100% sure you can get into and can afford), 3-5 matches (where you’re near the top 25%), then as many reaches as you wish or can afford. If you’re lower-income, make sure to ask for the fee waivers (application tests) so that your applications do not pose a financial problem to your family.

However with these stats, there are lots of colleges that would be interested.
Will you need financial aid? If so, focus on colleges that meet 100% need.

Plan to prepare for the ACT or the SAT using number2.com (it’s free) + prep books (you can borrow some from your library, or buy them). Plan to take the test twice. ACT is offered in September too.

Davidson would remain a reach but it’d be in North Carolina (and it meets 100% need without loans so if you’re middle class it’s good). Still in North Carolina, Wake Forest would be a lower reach than Davidson, Guilford would be a match to safety depending on your ACT/SAT score, as would UNC Asheville, UNC-Wilmington, and Appalachian State.

RUN THE NET PRICE CALCULATORS on every one of these schools (estimates will vary since each school calculates differently). Then bring the results to your parents: what schools can they afford? Which schools may offer you merit aid (automatic for stats? after competition?)
Please read this re: financial information.

Try to get your GPA up! A lot of my friends got in regular decision because UNC looks at second semester Senior grades for that applicant pool. With a good SAT score this should give you at least a shot. Good luck!
