The Unofficial (aka likely letters) Results of UVA RD Admissions

I just watched the kick off. The game this year looks awesome! Have a great time and good luck!

Did you go for height or stability?

Re: letters, for the very last time, they go out in waves and only a fraction of students will get them.

If you didn’t receive a likely letter, please don’t post your information. It doesn’t help anyone.

^ I wasn’t gonna. You’ve already shattered my hopes!

we are in the 4 ft weight class (yes they have 3 weightclasses depending on height) but can extend up to the top level and when we are fully extended, its a bit tipsy. otherwise we are pretty stable. we went basically full-out arm and have 4 wheel drive to get on top of another robot at the end of the game. we wont pick anyone up but we can put up/take down all rings from anywhere pretty fast.

sorry for hijacking your thread…maybe thisll bump it and ppl will use it more? just wanted to tell dean j: manchester is over. my team made it to the quarterfinals with me driving but lost to probably the 2nd best alliance in the elimination round. both were very close matches. o well…we had very strong showings and were probably the only robot on our team to live up to our pregame promises. too bad i cant do it next year :frowning: its so sad

Gime, congrats! It sounds like your robot worked, just got out maneauvered.

Hey, if you’re going to be in the engineering school at UVA, you can still do robotics! We have [a robotics education center/url within the Medical Automation Research Center and I just found out about this [url=http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~vision/]computer vision group](http://marc.med.virginia.edu/education.html), which sounds pretty interesting.

Best of all (drum roll) is [the FIRST Team mentored by UVA/NASA](http://carobotics.org/). The VCU regional was this weekend. I can’t find results at the moment.

If you get any free time Dean J, this site has videos of matches: http://www.soap.circuitrunners.com/2007/</a> It seems like the NH (manchester/bae) regional is the only one with videos right now. Click movies, nh, and there is every match for the bae regional.
UVAs team, 619, placed 51 out of 66 (3-5-0), and lost in the quarterfinals. I would like to see a video of their robot because it is tough to tell how good they are from such statistics. I got this info off of the first website.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: Yay! I am still waiting for Rodman though. Either way I am excited!!

My son , class of 2009 ED did not get Rodman with better stats, instate 780 math, 700 verbal, 800 calc bc, etc. Currently getting great grades in engineering. No need to give Rodman instate ED when they know they have you! I really do think the admissions people need to do a better job of stroking instate kids with great stats to keep them looking at UVa . My son started to look at other alternatives, private, not becaues they were a better fit, but because they did a better job courting him. Instate kids with great stats that could go elsewhere certainly must add to the stats. Nice to see that acknowledged. It seems there is almost a stigma invloved with Virginia kids with great stats that makes them look elsewhere-It is easy from Va. (not so but the out of state people seem to think you would not have their stats if you are there, ivy league stats if you are out of state, etc. Would love to see Dean J respond.

The likely letters are a great perk to receive, but if the vast majority of incoming freshmen don’t receive them anyway (as Dean J states in another thread), what is UVA’s objective in doing this? I know of an IS student who had decent grades/scores - but not superlative - and received a likely letter which was unexpected.

from the descriptions of the Echols and Rodman program, it seems like they focus a lot on essays, recs, and ECs rather than stats, whereas it seems like likelies are based on the whole file

I’m not quite sure I understand the question being asked.
EDIT: If this is about UVa “showing interest”, something about which you’ve posted before, I do have a comment. We’re a public school with a small staff serving tens of thousands of prospective students. We do our best to interact with students in a personal way, but reaching out to every single one is quite hard.

You’ve mentioned in the past that your son applied to private schools out of state. I can’t help but imagine that they have larger staffs and more money to work with. It’s hard to be compared to them. We’re constantly trying to do more, but there are some strategies that we’ll probably never be able to afford.

The purpose is stately quite simply in the letter. We want to tell a student that we were impressed with their application.

Likely letters aren’t about statistics. If an application gives us an overall “wow” feeling, we can put it on the list to get a letter. Yes, the stats have to be great, but there’s usually something that comes across in the activities, essays, and recs that is truly striking.

For those of you who got a letter, congratulations! For those who didn’t, hang in there! As I’ve said before, don’t read into the absence of a letter!

I’ve said it before: In my experience, the top kids from my school each year go to UVa and are happy to do so (not “settling” by any means). Many of the top kids in my class applied ED this year and were happy to get in. One or two students per year may get into an Ivy (but rarely HYPS). In a few cases kids have turned down the Ivy school for UVa for various reasons.
