Yay!!! Happy for you!
Did your offer come by way of the applicant portal?
Any Canadians/ International students waitlisted? Iâm just curious if they give US students priority.
Itâs not about priority. Itâs about which accepted students choose to enroll.
This is probably a good time to remind everyone that it only matters if you hear xyz has closed their WL from the school. Not from other posters here.
They may have filled all their spots for boys and will let boys on the WL know they are done. They may still be working through the WL on girls. Or thereâs no more FA. Or anything else. Sit tight!
Good I think. Just call them OFTEN telling one of them they are your first choice and that you are ready to write the check. It might take until July but I bet you can get off the waitlist if you are pleasantly persistent. good luck!
I disagree with this- I donât think chances are good to come off any of those waitlists; in fact I think chances are quite poor. And calling OFTEN as you say will come off as annoying, not persistent. Just my opinion, FWIW.
I genuinely want to know if this strategy has worked for people you know. We havenât seen it in action, since we donât know anyone who has resorted to it. We have seen a LOCI, a nice email or two, and natural waitlist movement lead to admits, but not often enough to turn a hopeful strategy into a proven one.
Well⊠IMO squeaky wheel gets the grease. Better to leave no stone unturned than look back and say âwe should haveâŠâ. At this point, they need to get âheads in bedsâ and if you are pleasantly persistent and they know for sure you are coming⊠why wouldnât they take you off the waitlist since you would be top of mind? Itâs a few 30 second emails and 2 min. phone calls. Why wouldnât you? Nothing to loseâŠ
I would say, it depends on the school and the circumstances.
Some less selective schools are focused on revenues and may be open to full pay even when âfullâ but one is persistent.
But when some schools say âwe are full,â they really mean it unless someone drops out (or a Trustee makes a call). And at highly selectives, they do want a specific bucket filled and it is about specific fit and not âtop of mind/top of pileâ.
One personâs âpleasantly persistentâ is anotherâs âobnoxiously annoyingâ. I know of an instance where a boy was going to be taken off the wait list by Hotchkiss but the parent was so obnoxious the kid wasnât. And to be clear, it was 100% due to the parentâs behavior, the kid was fine.
Because the parent is a PITA?!?
Being âtop of mindâ is not always a good thing.
I can imagine that every time you called, theyâd hang up and say âwhew! We dodged a bullet on that one!â They might be extrapolating that ",persistence " to future calls about room assignments, roommates, teachers, roles in plays, playing time at games.
Every school has seen PITA parents, and you donât want to get lumped into that group.
It is fine for a student who has not received any acceptances to indicate that to the schools at key dates and to let them know that they can commit quickly as a result. If you do this, you need to be prepared to accept the first offer you get promptly and to then advise the others of your changed status.
If anyone doubts whether schools consider prospective parental PITA as a factorâŠnot too long ago, a school staff member asked us if a family could be categorized as such in the context of admissions. Thankfully we were able to state unequivocally âNot at all.â We were relieved we could be positive and not just say âgee, we donât really know them.â
Sorry! I just saw this.
Not initially in the portal. Two days after the email I referenced in my original post, the Asst AO emailed my husband and I and asked to speak with us. We spoke with her that afternoon and she made a verbal offer. We accepted (verbally) and then she asked if she could call my daughter. She did, there were tears (of joy). She let us know we would receive an email with instructions later. That night we received an email that said that her admission decision had been updated and at that point we logged into the portal and were able to see the decision, contract etc.
Iâm sure different schools handle it differently, but that was our experience (and it was awesome). Hope you get the same!
I got of WMAâs waitlist 3 days after I receive the result. So I think some schools will do that. My other EL is probably occurring after April 10
