The Wait List

Exeter WL emails are out… not good news for us

What do they say?

"Thank you again for your interest in Phillips Exeter Academy.

We are writing today to provide you with an update on our enrollment. Our current projections for the upcoming year show that we are now overenrolled. This unfortunately means that we will not be able to offer any students on the waitlist admission to Phillips Exeter Academy. As such we will be closing our waitlist.

We have not made this decision lightly, as we know it will be disappointing for many students who had hoped to be offered a place here at Exeter. We felt it was important to send you this news as soon as possible so that you may make plans accordingly, if you have not already done so.

It has been a privilege and an honor getting to know you during this process, and we remain confident that you will have continued success in your educational journey."

Happy A10 folks. Here’s hoping for some WL movement over the next couple of days.

Any news on Deerfield’s waitlist? Should we be sending a new email following up with the process or just wait until the next few days?

Do you know any of their stats/information? (Gender, Grade Applying, Boarder/Day, International/Not)

Also, does anyone know if being a specific grade helps with your waitlist acceptance rate? For example, is it a higher chance as a incoming 9th grader instead of a incoming 10th grader?

If i was FA like basiclaly full fa (70-90%) would it help if i retract my fa application? my extended family is willing to pay, which they werent initially. and this is for sure, so would this change anything…

If you do not now need FA, you should let the schools know. It could help, but understand it may not make a difference.

Explain how your circumstances changed.

Any movement on Choate?

Got a call a few days ago and my child is off the Andover waitlist

if choose to remain in the wait pool after A10 (some schools offer such option e.g. a waitlist until summer or school year starts), do we still need to keep checking the school periodically during the post A10 waiting? and also updating the school about new achievements (if there is any)?
I am wondering how ppl usually handles this kind waitlist situation.

It can’t hurt to update with progress and to express continued interest if you remain genuinely interested in attending. At some point, they will probably tell you the WL is closed.

Checking the portal is a good idea as info about WL closing is likely to be there. If you are being offered a spot, they will almost certainly reach out to you, probably bt phone.

Every year, there are posters who hear nothing from a school or two aboutthe WL. It’d be nice if they signaled closure from their end, but they don’t.

In terms of timing, the very last activity happens mid summer, when the first tuition installment is due.

It turns out money does talk! We found out why my child was waitlisted. My child was the coaches top recruit. They had one spot open for a specific position, and he had two athletes for this position that he submitted to admissions. My child was the #1 and the coach has told others that they were the better athlete. But admissions went with #2 because they could pay 50% tuition and we couldn’t pay near that amount. So basically, the prep school teams are the best of the rich athletes, not the best athletes.

OUCH! I’m so sorry this is your child’s experience. It’s a painful reminder that education is a business in the US (private schools, boarding schools, colleges…) It sucks but hopefully your child holds their head high in that it is “not personal, its business” - it still stings though…
