The Wait List

We know a friend’s DS who came off the Peddie WL. We’re very happy for them.

We’ve had a couple email exchanges with our DS’s top choice school that he was WL’d at expressing our continued interest.

One thing we felt odd saying is that DS has been accepted and paid the deposit at another highly regarded BS to secure his spot (which we would forfeit it if taken off the WL from his top choice school)

Is this something important to mention to the WL school or is it ultimately inconsequential in the WL decision?

I would have held off on paying deposit until 4/10 in that scenario. I don’t think it’s necessary however to tell WL school what your child’s other plan is, if you’re 100% certain you would accept the WL school if they offered your child a spot.

No need to tell them what your fall back plan is and where you are with it.

It’s enough to say you will enroll if offered a spot.

I have emailed the admissions department two times with updates and have received no response — I suppose this means they are not interested in my DD

I wouldn’t read anything into it. They couldn’t have sent back an email saying “thank you for your update. We’ll advise you if we can offer your D a spot or if the WL is closed.” It’s still not personal, and promptly because they just don’t know.

You’re not applying, so you shouldn’t have sent updates anyway.

Even if your daughter sent updates, there should be zero expectation of a response to an update.

Question - If your kid decided to commit to a school before the deadline, is the expectation that you would let any school that they are waitlisted at know ? (Selfishly, I am just curious to see if they beat the odds and get off the WL at the other school. Not for any reason other than to know.)

Obviously, we let schools where they were actually offered spots know.

If you have no intention of accepting if you get off the wait-list, it’s poor form to not let the school know

No, not at all. WL schools EXPECT you to deposit where you have an acceptance, not to hold out for them, and they don’t need to know the details. While many students who have WL offers will choose not to take a place on the WL , some will. Of those who do, some will have the option of attending another BS and others will not.

The main criteria for staying on a WL is that you would prefer that school to the option you are moving forward with, whether it’s another BS or day school or your LPS.

Most WL activity takes place after the A10 commitment date because that’s when the schools have clarity on their fall enrollment.

Fwiw, most schools can “afford” to lose a few committed students before they need to go to the WL to backfill. But it’s generally not a lot, so movement at one school often creates a little movement at others who are losing students post A10 - even if the latter weren’t originally thinking they would use its WL. This is why most schools don’t communicate a lot about their WL situation ; it can be changeable.

Thanks

Whait is A10 Commitment?
Thank you

= April 10, the date many boarding schools require you to let them know you are accepting their offer.

Thanks so much.
Is it madatory to devide for April 10 ?
Then what is the deadline of May first?

I thought all admitted students has till the first May to decide where to enroll.

all the schools my kid was accepted to were April 10th.

Ah sorry
Thanks for your response.

If I’m sending an email to a school, should it be only to my admissions officer or should I add in my interviewer?

Send it to the whole office and cc your admissions officer. At least that’s what I did
