I thought the unlocked door that Negan walked out off is lazy writing. Surely they could have come up with something better than that, unless someone did it on purpose and we will find out later.
I believe the actress who plays Maggie is gone for good. I’m sort of bummed she didn’t get a better send off than that, unless they are just keeping the doors open.
I think the Whisperers are a good new touch and found it horrifying when that one ducked and stabbed Jesus. It will be interesting to find out more about.
I really didn’t think I’d watch anymore after Rick was gone, and am surprised how interested in the show I still am.
@conmama I think the door was accidentally left unlocked by Gabriel who had stormed out of there earlier. Negan only noticed it when the tennis ball rolled outside his cell.
I really like this season so far, but I agree that Michonne is totally annoying. I really wish they would fill in the details of what happened between her and those in the other communities so maybe we had more understanding about her behavior. I like the addition of the Whisperers too—very unsettling. It was sad and surprising that Jesus was killed.
The only character whose death bothered me was Glenn. He was one of my favorite characters! I think it was a mistake to kill him off the way they did. The show returns Sunday, February 10th at 9 pm ET.
It’s not just this show, but many shows now do the backstories and switch from the present to the past, and to me it gets tiring and interrupts the flow of the show. It’s alright occasionally, but I think it’s overdone. I bet you’re right, conmama, a lot of next season may be about what happened before the time jump.
We have finally caught up. I couldn’t open this thread until today. I keep getting amazed about this show. I get frustrated when people say they don’t like zombie shows as this is so much more.
So, what does everyone think of the first couple of episodes?
My thoughts. I love the scenes with Judith and Negan. I’m a little disappointed with the ‘Whisperers’, although it may turn out to be an interesting storyline. Michonne’s continued sour disposition is still annoying.
My comments will probably be unwelcome but as someone who loved the first 5-6 seasons of TWD, I’m almost hate-watching at this point. For me, the decline really began when Negan was introduced. I have nothing against Jeffery Dean Morgan but the writing has declined shockingly and I got very tired of his storyline dragging on for 3 seasons. I was willing to hang in and hoping they would right the ship until they killed Carl off which I still think was a terrible decision. Now that Rick is gone and they ditched Lauren Cohen’s Maggie so disrespectfully, it’s become a struggle. I understand that Michonne will depart next season and I simply am not that into Daryl. I still love Carol but she’s barely on the show any more and the newest characters have made no impression on me.
I don’t blame the actors who’ve left. It must be awful to keep having to talk to Chris Hardwick and all the various journalists about how great the upcoming episodes are going to be when they know much the quality has declined. That said, I’ll be sure to check out the planned Rick Grimes based movies. I’m hoping that those will be done with more care and taste that the original program and will be more like season 1 than season 9.
I’m surprised that I still find it interesting to watch. I really thought that after Rick was gone, I would not, but I also enjoy watching Judith and Negan. I have to admit I don’t like as much without all the main characters and really miss seeing Carol more. I do feel like it’s on a decline, but still not horrible.
I lost some interest after the cartoonish way they killed off Glenn - he was one of my favorite characters. I’m not interested in Negan (boooring!), but I love Judith’s character. I’m quickly losing interest in Michonne BUT I do really like the new lead female for the Whisperers named Alpha (actress Samantha Morton). When the 2 teens were talking about their mothers, it made me wonder if we are in for a showdown between Carol and Alpha - I hope so!
What did everyone think of the last episode? I was completely shocked, even though I knew something bad was going to happen, especially after they showed everyone meeting at the fair and signing the document that they would all work together. I think this season has been quite well done. The writing has been better than the past two seasons and it has really kept my interest. I can’t imagine what’s going to happen on next week’s season finale. Alpha is really scary.
Thanks for trying reviving this! I thought it was a great episode and didn’t see it coming. I agree this has been a very good season compared to the last two. I really thought with Rick gone, I wouldn’t be interested anymore.
Spoilers…
Every time they showed a head I think my eyes were getting bigger and bigger. I couldn’t believe it! Especially when I saw Tara more than anyone. They really did a good job. I was also surprised that Carol hadn’t seen Judith for 6 years. I bet we see Carol cut off her hair after Henry’s death and become completely badass again. Alpha IS scary!
I thought it was a very good episode, although how the Whisperers managed to capture that entire group and overpower them seems more than a bit unlikely. It’s interesting to me that they changed the ones killed from what happened in the source material. I haven’t really enjoyed much of this season, and as someone who used to like Carol’s character a lot, I just found her ‘Queen Carol’ this season annoying. I hope that Henry’s death causes a change in her character.
Well, what did you think? It was as exciting as last week, but still not terrible. Fairly calm for a finale, I thought. I found it interesting how they are treating Negan. I’m not sure I like that I’m softening up towards him either. I do really enjoy seeing how much he loves Judith. Remember that scene long ago when Rick looked like he had aged and was dreaming? Negan was planting a vegetable garden with a very young Judith. I think we will see a reformed Negan in the end.
I thought I would crack up when he said, I really miss you, Eugene, that smirky smile.
I’m glad Carol is leaving Ezekiel, we need to see a new Carol.
It was kind of a sleepy episode. That small amount of snow sure caused more problems than reality would allow but this is a show about zombies. I have to remember that, often! It was obvious, to me at least, that when Judith ran off that it would be Negan who saved her. I actually like the idea that he somehow redeems himself.
Why is it that the Whisperers’ area had not one flake of snow?
I’m not surprised, nor am I sorry, that Carol is over Ezekiel. I never liked that relationship.
