The Wire

There are no current dramas on television that I to out of my way to see. I do watch “Big Love” and “Damages” but I catch up on them “On Demand.” “The Good Wife” is good but I don’t mind much if I miss it. If Chris Noth’s part gets bigger, I’ll be more interested. I may be the only person in the world who doesn’t like “Friday Night Lights.” It just didn’t grab me. I don’t like any of the Law & Order/ acronym shows. I want to see “Breaking Bad” and I wish it were “On Demand.”

I second Breaking Bad and Mad Men! Can’t wait until they’re back!

About the Emmys…This is the Wikipedia page for the season 3 episode “Middle Ground.” There are citations–this paragraph is verified. :)

“Middle Ground” received the show’s first Emmy nomination, for writers David Simon and George Pelecanos in the category Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.[4] Following the show’s nomination Variety printed an article with an anonymous member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences explaining why they thought the show was not recognized in more categories.[5] They postulated that the show’s complex narrative made it impenetrable to first time viewers, that the location meant that the cast and crew were “out of sight, out of mind” to voters and that there is little connection to the drug markets of Baltimore for the majority California based voters.[5] Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle has cited the lack of Emmy recognition for the show as “an egregious oversight.”[6] Salon have written that the show is typical of the crime dramas that the Emmy awards have recognized in the past and called the lack of recognition “a sad case.”[7] David Simon suggested the lack of recognition was due to the show’s small audience, however, Salon refuted this and postulated that one of the major factors in winning an Emmy is having a recognizable producer who draws blocks of votes from his contacts in the industry - something The Wire lacks.[7]

I don’t understand how The Wire wasn’t nominated for Best Drama…and I can think of many actors on The Wire who could have–and should have–been nominated. Who would your picks have been?

I got hooked on Friday Night Lights and watched the first three seasons on DVD and Netflix instant download. Nowhere near as gritty as The Wire, though it’s certainly not everything-works-out-just-fine-by-the-end tv. Agree with other posters about The Sopranos (which has Wire-type grittiness, to put it mildly) and Mad Men. I’ve started on 6 Feet Under.

It is by far the best I have seen on television.
