The Zone Out Zone

Well, here is another study that falls into the category of not surprising but significant - readers who fall into the zone out zone - passive, mindless reading compounded by daydreaming do the worst reading comprehension tests. Zoning out seems to be a greater factor affecting test scores than complexity of the reading material. I wonder what the results of the study would be if passages from the SAT critical reading tests were used instead of War and Peace?

War and Peace contains long passages that make for easy zoning out–all those musings about history and military strategy! I’ll bet that anyone re-reading it skips those passages. After reading a few SAT criticial reading passages, I am also convinced that they are chosen with a high boredom factor in mind. If it weren’t for the fact that there is a test, eyes would glaze over.
