Does anyone know if there is respectable theater (or music theater)
thanks

Theater at Carleton is super-easy to get involved in…but not particularly good, or so that seems to be my impression. Academically, the theater department is tiny and offers few regular courses (unless you count the dance ones that give you PE credit). There are a bunch of difference theater groups here, though, so while if you wanted to major in theater here you might be frustrated, if it was an interest/hobby of yours you’d have a good time here. There’s the Carleton Players, who do one play per term and are faculty directed. People who are involved with the Players in some capacity (actors, extras, techies, etc) earn 1 academic credit for it on their transcript (a normal class is 6 credits, for the record). The Players did “The Exonerated” and “The Shape of Things” this year so far and I think are doing some silly new play about NASCAR for the spring term…no joke. There’s Experimental Theater Board (ETB), which does a variety of productions and is entirely student-run. They did “The Inspector” this year (which was hilarious) and “Private Eyes”, as well as some one-acts. There’s also Student Musical Theater (SMuT). They did a fairly bad version of “Guys and Dolls” not long ago but apparently a good musical fall term, or so my roommate tells me. I know there’s a 24 hour play coming up soon, you know, the kind that are written, directed, and performed in the course of a day. There’s also CHELSEA 11:17 (Creative Handwritten Episodes Lovingly Submitted or Extracted from Ass), a group that meets at 11:17 pm on alternating Fridays to perform short skits. These skits are written by students with enough copies printed for each part and then handed out in the theater, so you basically show up and are given a part and then when your play is called, you go up and read your lines from the script. All of these theater groups have lots of freshman involvement. Two of my good friends here, who are also freshmen, and one of them having zero prior theater experience, had the lead male roles in the winter Players production. If you want to do theater here, you can easily. If you want to do GOOD theater here, that might be asking a little much.

Theater at Carleton is really what you make it. There is a staggering amount of theater going on, and most of it is student-run. This term at Carleton (Spring 2006), there are ten separate productions, both student- and faculty-directed. That means if you want to do theater–acting, tech, directing, whatever–chances are someone’s looking for you. I have seen bad shows at Carleton, but I’ve also seen some really impressive work. Basically, at a school of Carleton’s size, it’s really up to you.
