My S stayed up last night trying to choose between Muhlenberg and Emerson Colleges. It was a long and painful process. He LOVED both programs!!! He was accepted in the BFA acting program at Emerson and thought the faculty was amazing…YET…There was something amiss with his feelings for the school. He could not express it. He really wants the opportunity to study the classics, Shakespeare and some comparative literature, while still having a strong conservatory approach to the study of acting. That is why he loves Emerson so much…BUT He also wantsto continue voice classes to keep his instrument strong. When he asked administration about the quality of the liberal arts courses he was told that they were as “challenging as he makes them.”…and he could schedule voice lessons outside of the program if he could fit them in his schedule. Even though Emerson has the name and the intense acting program, he felt that that alone wasn’t enough. He would have to work too hard at “making it work” for what he wants whereas Muhlenberg has it all there…classics, voice, dance and drama.
He is sick about it but hopes he made the right decision. He feels like he through away an opportunity that others would kill for…I told him…he needs to follow his heart and his gut. College is about experiencing and exploring ALL avenues of interest. Everyone on this board has been very supportive with each other within the decision process. I hope his was the right choice.
