Are there very many opportunities to act on campus?
How about off-campus? I know that Montreal is not NYC, but would it be possible to find off-campus jobs in the acting field?

I’m sure that the Theatre programme does do some stuff on campus. I’ve never heard of any big student productions at McGill though.

Montreal’s a pretty cultural city. Not New York, of course, but its still pretty cultural. I guess you’ll be able to find some acting work off campus. Just remember to check CIC’s rules for off-campus work beforehand, though.

I’m not looking for a job, but it kinda sucks that McGill doesn’t have a dance program. (Or at least I don’t know of one.) Now i have to look outside to take class.

this is from mcgill’s dept. of english undergraduate handbook:

"ENGLISH DEPARTMENT DRAMA PRODUCTIONS

MAJOR PRODUCTIONS

The Department stages one Fall production and one Winter production. Students may have the guidance of semi- or professional directors, designers, and technical support according to the demands of the play, timelines, production and workload and areas of expertise of current Drama faculty and staff. Students enrolled in Scenery or Costuming courses have the opportunity to acquire intensive experience in practical pre-production work and crew work during performances for course credit. Performers are cast from Drama and Theatre majors interested in acting and others who are eligible to audition including McGill students from other Faculties, alumnae and McGill faculty and staff members. Usually the actors selected for the major productions have had a substantial range of performance activity at McGill or elsewhere; however, all students enrolled in Drama and Theatre courses are encouraged to audition. Acting in a major production is a non-credit activity.

TUESDAY NIGHT CAFE THEATRE

The English Department Drama and Theatre Program sponsors a student-run theatre called Tuesday Night Cafe. Small scale performances, including drama, comedy, dance, and music, are held throughout the year in the Morrice Hall Theatre.

Tuesday Night Cafe is a learning experience for everyone. It is designed to provide an avenue of expression for students and faculty alike and offers an opportunity to gain production experience, to explore new dimensions in playwriting, acting, and directing without the pressures and complexities associated with the scale of a major production in Moyse Hall.

For further information about Tuesday Night Cafe, its operation and student participation, you are invited to make contact with the T.N.C. executive at 398-6600."

you can also check out the clubs on activities night. i’m not sure but there are probably some acting/theatre clubs. izabelle, i’m not sure if you are looking for serious and rigorous dance lessons, but there are dance clubs and mini-courses at mcgill that provide casual dance lessons.

Izabelle,

If you find any information about serious dance programs – ballet in particular – would you please post it? My daughter has been accepted at McGill, but the one thing that’s got her hesitating is the lack of a dance program. She’s not thinking of dance as a career, but she’s been taking ballet on a fairly intense level since she was 4 and doesn’t want to give it up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Congratulations, jpm150! I definitely will look into it. Although I hope you’re not hoping for a fast reply bcoz for me, dance is just a hobby. I have a bunch of financial aid/immigration stuff to deal with so researching dance classes in Montreal is on hold for right now. But yea, i’ll definitely post whatever info i find.

Izabelle, My son graduated from McGill last Spring, so we’ve been through the immigration stuff. It does seem daunting at first, and it will give you a good taste of the bureaucracy that you’ll have to navigate with McGill’s administration, but it’s really not all that difficult. And once you get the two student visas (one from the federal government and one from Quebec), you’re done for four years. As for financial aid, if you’re a US citizen you are eligible for the various US federal programs. We never did unlock the key to direct financial aid from McGill for international students.

you can also apply for entrance bursary.

and as for immigration stuff.

heres the order of how to do stuff
- wait until you recieve your acceptance letters.
2), if you are under 18, draft the letter to the dean of students (theres a copy in the booklet you recieve int hemail), and send it in. wait for their letter back. - fill out the form for a CAQ, send it in with all the necessary paperwork (its really just a copy of your passport, a bank statement, stuff thats easy to get)
- wait for your CAQ to come back
- send in your study permit forms.
now if you dont have time to send in the study permit forms, its okay, because they can take care of it at the border.

any questions?

about dance programs - mcgill has no official dance program.
there are places to take lessons in montreal. i mean, its a city, so there are ways to get involved. but not through mcgill.

beatlespwr,
Can international students apply for entrance bursary? I was under the impression that it was limited to Canadian residents.

Thank you so much for all the info, beatlespwr and jpm150.
jpm - If you’re talking about the McGill Entrance Bursary program, international students are eligible for that. Obviously i’m an international student, and my minerva account has all the links to the 3 parts that make up the application.
now for more questions…
Will the United States FAFSA program help fund my education at McGill? If so, when will i know how much i’m gonna get?
(okay, that was only one question, but whatever)

i am an international student (i’m from new jersey)
and i have entrance bursary

i dont know about fafsa. you should search their website or find someone to call.
