Not to accuse UCD students or cause any suspicions, but just wondering…how’s the theft at UCD? like…I’m sure you should take care of your stuff (bike locks, etc) but do you need to go the whole nine yards and get a whole bunch of locks for things like your laptop, tv, etc? if you have game systems and stuff, could you expect them to be there when you get back from the holidays or the weekend? just wondering how much money i should be spending on anti-theft “material”…and it would be nice if you could rate how bad it is there… 1 being good and 10 being the worst

If you and your roommates are smart about closing and locking your door every time you leave the room, then you don’t have to worry about someone breaking in and stealing. Doors left open are just baiting thieves. A laptop lock is a smart idea (if you loose those term papers you wouldn’t want to rewrite them).

Things that are left outside your room, such as your bike especially overnight, will need locked. Get a cheap bike and a nice bike lock. Also, when you lock your bike, make sure to lock it to a non-removable object, going through the frame and front tire of the bike. If the seat of the bike is removable, then buy a seat lock or bring the seat with you to class.

Theft isn’t bad here, it’s just petty theft. If you just use common sense your stuff should be safe.

let me just tell you this…

compared to uc riverside (no offense to anyone there!!><), uc davis is safe.
In uc riverside if student park on watson street, there is a very very big chance that their car windows will me shattered along with their personal belongings in the cars taken. some days, when you walk down watson steet in mid afternoon, you notice the lines of student cars parked on the side of the road. Most if not all are broken in to, AND THIS IS ONLY OUTSIDE OF CAMPUS.

In my honest opinion, uc davis is super safe. it’s just petty theft that occurs in which people should be cautious about.

Get a U lock for your bike they are really good----but I second the “lock your bike TO something” comment. My D locked her bike to itself (on a few occassions I am sure) with no problem…until she came back to the dorm from the ARC one night late only to discover her great new dorm friends had put her bike 25 feet up in a tree. Gotta love a good college prank…let’s just say she always locked it to something after that. Lesson learned. She did have her light on her bike stolen–so she just got an easy on/off one and then always took it off when she parked her bike. Another lesson.
