Their eyes were watching god.

I’m currently doing an essay on the novel.
Here is my essay topic:

"People and events can alter or change a person, for better or for worse; experiences and people have also influenced Janie in the novel.

For your paper you need to choose three people and/or experiences that you feel have influenced, altered or impacted Janie’s life and describe how those factors shaped her as a person."

My current thesis statement:
In the novel, Their eyes were watching god, by Zora Neale Hurtson, people and events have shaped our protagonist, Janie; the three greatest influences on her life are blank, blank, and blank.

I’m considering Jody, Tea Cake, Logan, and Nanny. Can anyone here help me on which 3 I should choose?
I’m also having a difficult time finding quotes from these characters. Help?

I’d write about Joe Starks, Tea Cake, and the pear tree.

pear tree- It completely shapes how Janie feels about love. Throughout the rest of the novel, Janie measures her love against this experience.

Joe- Janie was young and naive. Joe became fat, lazy, and took her for granted. Note the sense of freedom she felt after he died. The best source of quotes for Joe would be the confrontation between Joe and Janie (“Ah ain’t no young gal no mo’ but den Ah ain’t no old woman neither. Ah reckon Ah looks mah age too. But Ah’m uh woman every inch of me, and Ah know it… When you pull down yo’ briches, you look lak de change uh life.”).

Tea Cake- He too isn’t exactly trustworthy (gambles, slapped Janie, etc.), but he’s as close to a true love as she gets.

Note that she returns to Eatonville and resumes using the name Starks.

joe, tea cake, and nanny are prominent figures in Janie’s life

I kinda like the idea of the Pear tree as well…makes for an interesting essay!

Ughhhh…i hated that piece of s*** book. DIE ZORA NEALE HURSTON!!! BURN IN HELL!

Oh yeah, I forgot about the pear tree.
Right now, I think Joe and Tea Cake are going to be for sure.

Pear tree or Nanny. Any more advice on which one I should choose?
I want Nanny because she wanted Janie to become more involved in social positions and good wealth.

The Pear tree is something I didn’t pay too much attention on in class.

Exactly my thoughts. Anyway, I would choose Nanny, as it would obviously be easier to write about if you didn’t give the pear tree much thought in class. Furthermore, that pear tree scene is ridiculous. I mean seriously, the book goes on for like 4 pages on how Janie wants to have intercourse with the pear tree… damn dendrophiliac. (I know that wasn’t the point of the scene, but it’s fun to exaggerate).

the pear tree is masturbation, so go with nanny.

Any good essay reviewers/graders here?
I want to make my essay look good because it counts as a test grade.

All I want are suggestions to make it better and corrections.

Don’t talk about the pear tree. Everybody talks about the pear tree.

Can anyone here proofread it for me? It is a bit late here.

It sucks, but if you have time to help me proofread it, I would most appreciate it.

I can PM it to you.
Anyone? Please?

Nevermind. I’m done.

This book sucks. Seriously it does. The english is really bad. It made my 600 writing score go down to a 450. Now that I studied, it is back up to 550. DAMN my english teacher for making us read it!!!

Aw, I liked the book. I did my IB English Oral on the metaphors and personification in it. :D

What is wrong with you all I absolutely loved this book!
and btw Zora Neale Hurston is already dead.

i know, but she should be reincarnated and then made to BURN IN THE INNER CIRCLES OF HELL, along with William Faulkner.

I like Hurston and Faulkner. :o

I could go the rest of my life without reading another page of Mark Twain and be perfectly happy, though.

hear, hear

i would go with a mixture of Nanny and Logan Killicks for the first paragraph then move onto Jodie and Tea Cake. Logan is important in making janie realize more about love. btw, the pear tree is bull---- imo. something that is totally overanalyzed similar to vardaman’s age in As I Lay Dying
