theoninon.com consistently makes me crack up!

I’ve rarely read an Onion article that wasn’t 100% on point.

Love the Onion. What cracks me up more is when folks take the articles seriously and don’t realize they are satire.

Here’s a good one in the current online issue that touches on topics being discussed in the water conservation thread:

ROFL! Here is a great one - somewhat related to my industry:

And this one could have been on CC:

Written like a Wall Street Journal article about the econony.

And to think it all started in Madison, Wisconsin years ago.

I can’t tell you how many of these get shared by people I know who seem to think the story is real. Same with the outrageous stories that have been long ago discredited by snopes. I agree, the onion does make me laugh. What fun it must be to write clever satire all day.

I love love the Onion!

Two of my favorites are:
“Archaeological Dig Uncovers Ancient Race Of Skeleton People” http://www.theonion.com/articles/archaeological-dig-uncovers-ancient-race-of-skelet,932/

and

“Scientists Trace Heat Wave To Massive Star At Center Of Solar System” http://www.theonion.com/articles/scientists-trace-heat-wave-to-massive-star-at-cent,21088/

the site that posts screen shots of people who believe theonion stories is http://literallyunbelievable.org/

I teach college English, and I sometimes use them in class, as examples of using humor to make an argument. I think I’ll include this one from today:

I got sick of getting onion articles on FB so I blocked it there.

It is pretty hilarious. I know, unfortunately, too many people who believe what is written as truth.

Thought this was appropriate to post given how many threads on cc about the pros and cons of greek life…

Years ago, when more of a local publication, I thought it was rather stupid. Which it was. I once heard an interview with the founder, who stated that they were trying to start a publication to sell ads, and needed some content. Regular news being too expensive, they decided to just make sh**t up. Fake news.

Over the decades have honed their humor to a razor edge. I can’t remember the details, but the headlines for 911 were one of the most poignant statements on the event imaginable.

Here is a Top 25 list.

One of S’s college classmates who comes from our area–you know, one of those unemployable English majors?–writes for The Onion.

Another funny one. Warning: Video with language.
