Theory of Smartness

Okay so I just wanted to put this theory out here and see what you guys think.

So my theory is that people from disadvantaged backgrounds usually will be smarter than those of the middle or upper class. Smarter by means of GPA and harder classes etc. This is due to them not having much so they will work for things so that they too can have a comfortable life. Also those of the middle and upper classes don’t really have to work TOO hard for things. They will have food and shelter essentially no matter what.

For example in the Lifetime Movie Homeless to Harvard the girl got those things cuz she was poor and she worked hard. There are also countless other examples like this.

Also usually you will see a lot of smart foreign students. It’s because they don’t have the luxuries that people here do so work to get it.

Just to clarify for some I’m not saying that the people of the middle class or upper classes aren’t smart.

So that’s my theory. Any comments?

You wanna know my theory?
It’s called “Get a Life, Seriously”

I think your theory is flawed. For one, you should take into consideration parental influence. A lot of lower income families are single parent or the parents didn’t go to college. There isn’t an example in the home for them to follow. Some lower income students don’t have access to things like private tutors that could help them get a higher GPA. Basically, poor doesn’t equal high achieving and neither does rich.

Poor generalization. I know well off people who bust butt in school because their parents push them. A lot of lower income people end up dropping out of schools in my area.

I think that, for the most part, your “theory” is true. I myself, being from an immigrant family, has been raised with the notion that the only way to be successful is to get a good education. Now, I don’t know if that goes for all poorer class families, but Asian students generally work harder/focuses more because of the Confucian notion stating tha the only way to move up socially is through education. Actually, I think this “theory” only applies to immigrant families. Many lower-class people, whose familes has been in America for generations, at my school really don’t seem to make an effort.

I also think wealthier parents put more pressure on their kids to go to a top college and to live up to their expectations.

and besides wealthier childrend o not HAVE to work as hard, because their parents will build a new building and get admission for their children anyways
and i would be wary of making such sweeping conclusions. middle class children can be hardworkers too !

I agree with the last one.
Coming from a low income family, you have to make your own opportunities, nothing is handed to you.
You actually know what the real world is like and you are generally more street smart.
Coming from low income, you’ve seen what that life is like and would do anything to get out of it. It’s not that we are smarter or even that we work harder. For the most part, it’s that we’re more motivated and we realize that we don’t have mommy and daddy’s money to fall back on. You either succeed or you force your children to have the same upbringing you did, and that’s not generally something low income people desire.
