There should be a Desert Olympics

<p>I like to watch certain events of the Winter Games, but I think it’s unfair that entire continents like South America and Africa are left out. I don’t want to see just a bunch of Europeans patting each other on the back for having the world’s best mountains. </p>

<p>So if there is a Winter Games, why not a Desert Games? Biathlon’s a stupid sport if you think about it, but it’s idiocy is lessened if there’s a “hot” equivalent to it. Say, run 20 km in the desert to a watering hole, and back. Or how about a run through the jungle? </p>

<p>I don’t really know where I’m going with this. I guess the Winter Games gives a chance for countries like Norway and Austria to feel important for once.</p>

<p>Six African countries sent athletes to the Turin/Torino Olympics (Algeria, for example). Also, remember, winter is not limited to the Europe and Asian. Southern African and southern South American both get winter and show in the moutains.</p>

<p>And don’t forget: Japan, South Korea, and China are among the Asian countries sending athletes (and they win winter medals). So, basically, saying that the Winter Olympics are for Europe and North America only is faulty.</p>

<p>The whole concept of Winter Games is inferior to Summer Games due to the fact that anybody can build a swimming pool, but nobody can create the Alps or the Rockies. If you have them, great, but if you don’t, you can’t do much unless you’re willing to spend tons of money to train abroad.</p>

<p>Wait two years, watch the real Olympics, and watch the Africans walk away with most of the medals in the running events.</p>

<p>Yeah people complain all the time that the Winter Olympics are stupid because not all countries field a team, and no blacks particpate. Well here is a news flash for you, maybe blacks just suck at winter sports and countries that don’t field a team, probably don’t have business participating. India always has one of the smallest Olympic teams in the Summer or Winter Games despite its huge population.</p>

<p>…you could have just said that there aren’t a lot of black people in cold, wintry areas, rather than “maybe blacks just suck at winter sports”.</p>

<p>Argentina and Chile have mountains and glaciers I believe, and both countries have athletes competing in this year’s Olympics.</p>

<p>random - an Australian friend of mine mentioned a girl from her homeland who competed in the winter Olympics some years back, and did really well in skiing. apparently the girl would practice jumps by skiing off her roof into the pool. man. dedication.</p>

<p>You say there should be a “desert” games. Should there also be a “tropical rainforest” games? Where’s the parallel structure?</p>
