<p>I don’t favor the death penalty for Saddam, in as much as I don’t favor the death penalty for Bill Clinton, who killed more than three times as many Iraqis, half of them children. But the U.S. managed to avoid great embarrassment from a trial about the gassing of the Kurds or the Iran War, strongly encouraged by the “handshake” with Rumsfeld. They HAD to execute him now, before the other trials could take place.</p>
<p>Don’t expect any repercussions. Iraqis - whether they be Sunnis, Shias, or Kurds - know who the real enemy is now, and overwhelming favor killing them.</p>
<p>IMO, I believe the execution was a mistake because it will increase sectarian violence. I could care less about Hussein or Bush as people themselves.</p>
<p>I can see why the US wanted a quick execution…cause who wants the truth to come out about the WMDs etc…trials would show our hand in the entire affair</p>

Anyone who supported Saddam already was already angered at the way things were going…I mean it’s not like they were only semi-angry because he was in jail and not dead. <p>I don’t feel sorry in the least for Saddam. And I’m not a “lib”; in fact (although I am increasingly embarrassed to admit it) I voted twice for W and am a registered Republican, but the guy has botched Iraq beyond all reason. I suppose when I think about it, maybe the Hague was not the right place to try Saddam as several people associated with the trial were assasinated and they probably didn’t want that sort of thing happening to them. Didn’t think about all of our US skullduggery coming out. I just think that a lot of Saddam’s trial came across as a bad joke rather than a solemn judicial undertaking, plus he was hanged in the Green Zone, which just furthers our involvement in all this mess. The entire situation is beyond sad and pathetic. It is one thing to mess up a baseball team; quite another to mess up an entire country.</p>
<p>I am also not laying this entirely at the feet of W. Cheney and Rumsfeld are equally responsible.</p>
