Thin Resources; Too Many SUNY Research Centers?

I’ve just noticed that the State University of New York has helped established 17 technology research centers at various SUNY campuses throughout the state. Sure, they are all run by private non-profit organizations, but still, doesn’t having so many dilute the opportunities for all? Would the money raised and spent be better utilized at a handful of campuses?

This smacks of the muddled mission that SUNY was saddled with ages ago by the state’s near-sighted and provincial politicians. That’s why there is no ‘flagship’ SUNY campus, unlike the excellent higher ed organizations in California, Michigan and Wisconsin. I think SUNY’s approach with its Research Foundation is a mistake.
