Things That Really Annoy You

The many places who spend forever after they have rung you out. They make a big production out of laying down the receipt, saying you saved “THIS much” and circling the amount with their pen. (no, not really, I wasn’t going to pay your inflated not-on-sale prices).

Ditto for the ones that lay out the receipt, show you their website and receipt code, and tell you to go on-line and take the survey. Grrrr. They could make many customers happier and save a lot of time if they stopped these two practices. JC Penney’s and Kohl’s are two of the biggest offenders.

About a year ago, my closest grocery store started doing something so annoying that I stopped shopping there.

At the checkout, the touchpad for using a debit/credit card, asks if you’d like to donate to a charity. Every week or month it’s something different. When I press ‘no’, the cashier then asks if I’d like to donate, so again I have to say ‘no’. I donate when I can write a check and know that the money is going where I want it. I don’t want to be made to feel like a cheapskate when grocery shopping because I don’t want to donate daily or weekly to the March of Dimes, or Breast Cancer or whatever. Every week a new disease and I’m made to feel like Scrooge.

So I took my business elsewhere.

Me and all my unfinished projects - very annoying. Plus, all the stuff I haven’t gotten to yet, like the readily available winter hats and scarves neatly placed near the front door. Now that the AC is on, it’s very annoying to see!

The people who are protesting the recipient of an honorary degree at my graduation…seriously? What exactly are you hoping to accomplish, other than ruining the special day of thousands of grads?

The reason you get the dollars first is because the registers tell the cashier how much change to get back; such as $3.67. Thus the cashier pulls out $3 and then 67 cents. In the old days that we remember, the cashier counted up starting with the change. It was so much easier to receive the money. I agree with you on that.

While entering/exiting a shopping venue and being confronted by anyone, especially children, seeking $$ support their cause/team.

my husband

Thank you for explaining this to me! This has driven me crazy for years. I think I’m finally getting the hang of sliding the coins off the top into my coin purse, but it’s so inconvenient.

I’ll add my vote to this being one of the things that really annoys me.

When I worked a cashier once years ago, a customer asked me politely if I would give her the change before the bills, as otherwise the coins tend to slide off. I had never realized!

Since then, I’ve noticed that experienced supermarket checkers tend to give the change first.

I have become so aware of this, that when I pay with cash, I hand the cashier the change and then the bill(s)!

Sometimes when a cashier is obviously preparing to give me several coins and I see the bill(s) coming at me, I ask for the coins first.

my father in law. I know that he is the way he is because he is 94 and his memory is not intact. But does he HAVE to be so MEAN?

When people only want to know you on gift giving occasions for their kids.

^^ When such parties are scheduled on Mother’s Day…

When people RSVP to an event saying they will come and then not show up. Do they not realize the amount of time, effort and money spent on their behalf or do they really think the world revolves around them? Seriously how hard is it to email or call even just a few days ahead and let people know of your change in plans.

People (generally of the male persuasion) who cannot be bothered to turn their shirts right-side-out before they put them in the laundry hamper. And don’t even get me started on those balled-up sweaty socks.

(Can you guess what I’m doing right now?)

Every morning I line up to get the paper at a newstand near the train. Once a person at the head of the line gets what they need, they turn around and try to walk back the way they came (through the line of people as if we aren’t even there). I don’t know what to say to these people – they look at me as if I’m in their way – they don’t say excuse me or anything.

I must be invisible. I should rob a bank or something…

People who, instead of nicely answering a question, treat you like you’re stupid for asking such a question. My son had a professor this semester who acted like that, and I told him it was good preparation for real life.

And people who take it as a personal affront when you even suggest that everything is not so peachy keen. I know you’re on a personal mission to sell this bill of goods, but I cannot in good conscience let more and more people be deluded that this fantasy you’re selling is real.

sryrstress, that annoys me a lot, too. My coworker got fired from his job as a cashier because he didn’t do it. At Sears, we are given a laundry list of things we have to ask and show the customers, and we are written up if we don’t do it. The cashier lead also keeps track of how many surveys we get from our receipts, among other things. We get in trouble if our review isn’t perfect (even if it’s not our fault, like if the review goes down because the customer couldn’t find something).

Doctor, dental or other professional offices where there is TV constantly blaring. I don’t mind a morning news show, the local news channel, the weather channel, or CNN so much but game shows later in the morning or soap operas in the afternoon? What happened to bringing a book or picking up a magazine? I was waiting in a fairly large waiting room last week with sixteen waiting, only 3 of us with reading material. Game show on one TV and a kids program on another.

Cash. In general, cash just annoys the crap out of me. Luckily, most everything (even pop machines and some laundry facilities) are installing card swipers so you can pay with your card. There is nothing more annoying than collecting quarters for laundry (especially when it’s $3 per load! That’s a lot of freaking quarters).

I’m with Romanigypsyeyes on the quarters. But my peeve is that my community has almost no metrocard machines, so if our cards are empty, we have to use $5.50 in change. That is really a lot of change.
