Things to do in Cincinnati for a 20 soon to be 21 year old?

My daughter is doing an internship at Procter & Gamble in Mason, OH. She is staying in an Xavier University dorm with other interns from other companies. The little bit that I saw of Cincinnati was so depressing. Mason is different, newer and cleaner, but not geared toward young people’s fun. I heard the Cincy era was great for young people. Am I missing something? She did go rafting this weekend with her boyfriend who flew up from his internship in NC, so that was good. Can’t remember what the name of the place was, but it wasn’t too far.

Mount Adams is a nice area to explore, just next to downtown. The riverfront area is also very nice. Go to the ballgame and then to the various restaurants around the river area.

Well, it depends how you define young people’s fun. I would imagine there is a lot to do around Xavier’s campus, or even the University of Cincinnati.

The area around P&G proper is industrial, so there’s not much there… But Cincinnati is a great city … there is the Newport Aquarium just across the river, if she likes sports there is a Reds game or professional soccer, there are the art museums (the Taft is free admission), concerts at Riverbend, etc.

I love Cincy (although I might be a bit biased, lol).

The area where she is staying, by the XU dorms, is actually a great location. Listermann Brewing Company is right across the street from XU, and maybe she will appreciate that a little more when she actually turns 21. But That area is very convenient by car or bus or Uber to Hyde Park Square (neat walkable neighborhood with shops and restaurants and a farmers market on Sundays), Oakley (Rookwood Pavilion shopping and restaurant area, with some nightlife in Oakley Square, and a movie theater, cycling studio and other things to do in the new mixed use district near Crossroads church), Kenwood Mall (traditional mall with some upscale retailers and more restaurants), Clifton (where the University of Cincinnati is, with some nightlife, an indie movie theatre that shows less mainstream movies, restaurants and shops that appeal to college students), Over the Rhine (recently redeveloped historic area with nightlife, unique restaurants, Washington Park with lots of community events scheduled there, Music Hall and Findlay Market), the Riverfront (lots of Riverfront parks that connect with each other and with Newport on the Levee in Kentucky so the entire thing is walkable or she could rent one of the Red Bikes at various locations in the parks, the Banks which has some nightlife, Great American Ballpark where the Reds play, and the streetcar that so many people here are excited about), and Mount Adams (nightlife, Playhouse in the Park, Eden Park, Art Museum). A lot of community festivals and events take place in the summer in the riverfront parks. Downtown has the Aronoff and the Taft Theatre for plays and concerts. She can also look for concerts and other events at Riverbend, a little farther east along the river. If she likes outdoorsy stuff, both Cincinnati parks and Hamilton County parks offer some nice hikes (both park districts have websites with that information), and there is a biking path surrounding Lunken Airport, which isn’t terribly far from XU. I hope she enjoys her time here!

My daughter was there for a business trip and there were cute restaurants in Over the Rhine.

If your D and boyfriend like ice cream, they should go to one of the Graeter’s ice cream stores. There are a number of locations in the city. It is wonderful ice cream.

Thanks for the wonderful suggestions! As for the ice cream, I had Graeter’s while I was there moving her in. It was wonderful! Wish we had those in FL.

I did an internship at P&G many, many, many summers ago. We all got season passes for Kings Island and would head up there some evenings and occassional weekends. Really had fun with that.

What? No palm trees and ocean?!

There is a ton for her to do in Cincy.

  1. Mt Adams is a great place on Fridays, and Saturdays, but prepare yourself for parking hell.
  2. Cincy Zoo is one of the best in the country.
  3. Since she is staying at Xavier, she isnt far from Hyde Park. There are great restaurants in rookwood and Hyde Park Square.
  4. Once she turns 21, Mad Tree brewery is hopping on Friday nights.
  5. Liberty Town Center,- this will be a bit of a drive, 25 mins,(yes 25 mins is considered a long drive in cincy). This is a new open air retail/entertainment complex with a comedy club, shopping, restaurants, etc.
  6. The gateway area in OTR, downtown, is a great area on a friday, although if she isnt 21 Im not sure if she can get in some of the places.
  7. Tons of kids hang out on Calhoun, the main drag by University of Cincinnati.

Hour and a half drive to Columbus if she hasn’t been there where there is lots to do/see!!! Miami U is a 1/2 hourish away.

I second the zoo!

We just spent 3 hours there last week after spending the night en route from WI to FL via I75 (went to Midwest from FL other routes). Summers in FL are brutal, we retired to Tampa from WI and miss the foliage and less hot temps. btw- the Hyatt Place is an excellent hotel chain for parents if they visit.

Just for a fun and different half a day have her go to Jungle Jim’s. it grocery store you can spend a couple of hours walking around. Very unique.

About an hour north in Dayton is the Airforce Museum. It’s free and you could easily spend most of a day there.

If she likes amusement parks I think Kings Island is nearby.
