Things to do in Savannah, GA?

I’ll be there for a day (and night) in late April, on the way to Hilton Head for a conference. Can anyone suggest things we shouldn’t miss? Thanks.

Lived in Savannah 3 different times in my adult life from the early 70’-mid 80’s. If you have never been there and have time during the day, consider some type of guided tour. If you are a Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fan, there are tours arranged around places from the book/film. River Street is nice, but if time is limited, I would concentrate my time in the historic district. There are places like the Davenport House, St. John’s Cathedral, that are gorgeous. St. John’s Episcopal Church housed Sherman and Union troops during the Civil War. The historic part of the city is built around a series of squares which make for incredible photography, walking tours, etc. At the time of year you will be in Savannah, everything will be in bloom and the weather should be warm but not hot. If you want to sample true southern cooking, then line up at Mrs. Wilke’s Boarding house for lunch. Lines form early. One of my favorite places in Savannah is E. Shaver’s bookstore-on one of the squares about one block from Abercorn Street ( main N-S artery through the city). Here is a great link that will give you a lot of 'real-time" advice on planning a trip. BTW, there are fabulous B and B’s, inns in the historic area.
I LOVED the night ghost tours by trolley! And make sure you eat at The Lady & Sons. ;)

Georgiatwins – Is Mrs. Wilkes still living? We ate breakfast or lunch there numerous times when we used to take extended winter vacations in Hilton Head in the late 80s and 90s, but haven’t been back to Savannah since 2002 or thereabout.

over 30 – April is a spectacular time to be in Low Country, or so I’ve heard since we always had to head back to NY around St. Patrick’s Day. As long as you avoid the Sea Pines area during the Heritage golf tournament.
