Had a phone call today from my crying college sophomore that started with “I did something terrible that I didn’t mean to do.” The parent in me immediately started calculating how fast I can get to her school 4 states away and bail her out. Turns out it was a problem at work where some data in a file was corrupted - so no bail is required, just calming words and a “that is why companies have tech departments.” This reminded me of a thread a while ago about emergency calls from your kids - so I figured I would start another one of those.

How about this text: " I got into trouble last night but I can’t talk about it now." Turns out that it was her suite mates birthday and she ( suite mate) had some friends up, and they got a little loud ( it was not quiet hours, but they were still too loud). All of the girls got into trouble and received a point ( 3 points and you are out) for a " noise violation." They have a student run court room and my D was able to have her point removed by making a poster (?) and explaining that it was her suite mates birthday and they were simply laughing and kidding around. Then she apologized for making too much noise and disturbing the people on the floor. Thankfully there was no alcohol involved; just cake!

:))

D: “I just ate a bunch of sliced apples and now my lips are swelling, my tongue feels big and my throat is itchy”
Me: as I’m realizing my mom was allergic to apples “take 2 Benadryl right NOW!”
D: “I think my roommate used the last one”
Me: “someone must have some!”
D: “no and it’s getting worse”
Me: you need to go to ER. CALL 911!
D: can I just have someone drive me?
Me: NO!!!

Twogirls-my d and her friends got in “trouble” last semester for playing with play-doh. Apparently they were being silly and loud and the ra thought it smelled like alcohol! The ra refused to believe it was just play-doh and ended up calling security who left shaking their heads. I think the ra ended up in more trouble than d and her friends!

1:00 am in the morning on a weekday last fall.
DS - “Mom my password expired and I have to register for classes in the morning.”
Me - " ok why are you calling me?"
DS - “They have this security system in place so I need you to get on your computer and wait for an email from them”
Me - “ok, let me log in… alright I have the email. it says the code is xxx”
DS - " ok now I need you to hang up the phone because the computer is going to call you with another code. Oh by the way you need to write it down…"
Me - so I hang up , the phone rings, the computer says a long number really fast I write it down and call
DS back with it. He is able to reset his password…

Needless to say I reminded him a couple of days ago that he needs to change it again BEFORE it expires this time…

Dd - Dad, I got ticketed by the cops
Me - why. You don’t have your car with you
Dd - oh I was in this bar, my friend went to the restroom, I was “just holding” the beer for her
Me - I was born in Asia - not Mars
Dd - yeah, sorry - is my life ruined forever?

The same D (now graduated for a few years) apparently told my wife last week - you were too easy and trusting when I headed to college. I want you to talk to sis (who heads off this fall) about drinking? Or should I

When S got into trouble, he didn’t call us. I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. He didn’t realize that certain communications would be sent to his home address… We didn’t freak out and we helped him with the matter. (Both of which were predictable, but he always likes to play things close to the vest.)

I lost my debit card, again, and I have no money.
Lucky for D1, she had premier acct so a new one was sent to her overnight. Of course she would never have her checks with her.
We were lucky we never got the, “Please bail me out of jail” call. Maybe I shouldn’t speak too soon, our younger one is just a sophomore.

“I have mono.” Two days before classes start freshman year.

Several years ago, my son called, “mom, are there any surgeons on our medical plan near campus”? Me, gulp, (an ER nurse), ok, he’s talking and sounds ok! All worked out fine.

Mine called Tuesday to tell me she had mono, however she has been eating lots of kimchee from a Korean restaurant by her house & she is much better.

Great response.

H got a text last week late at night from S saying., " taking Stats is the worst decision I ever made in my whole academic career!" And of course, I was the one suggested it would be a good course to take given what he wants to do after graduation - even though it is not a requirement for his major. I felt like **** since I talked him into it. After a few texts trying to schuss out the problem we just left it with a do your best. He did call a few days later and confessed he was just feeling overwhelmed and stressed out at the moment with the workload he had on his plate. I told him anytime he feels like having a melt down just call and we are hear to listen.

S1, freshman year, first day of class…“Hey Mom, my car broke down. My friend and I had to push it from the edge of campus to a space by my dorm but it can’t stay there long or it will towed. What should I do?”

Third week of freshman year…“Mom, I sprained my ankle playing basketball. I’ll be on crutches for awhile”

Summer after freshman year…away at NROTC training…“Mom, I broke my wrist today while doing combat drills. At least I beat the guy I was going up against.”

Also got the “bail me out of jail call” (underage drinking) at 6a.m the summer after his freshman year but he was at home for the 4th of July so the trip to the courthouse wasn’t too long.

Senior year…“Mom, I just got in a wreck. I was driving my roommate’s truck. It’s dented up pretty good but the good thing is the guy I hit was driving a rental car so he didn’t really care.”

I’ve posted this before, but new people might enjoy it. Phone call from my son (not a student at this point): “I just wanted to tell you before I post the pictures on facebook - I got bitten by a shark”.

Glad he did as the pictures were bloody! (he has a nicely scarred hand to show for it, but all digits still attached)

Yikes, swimcatsmom, I think you win!

2 a.m. phone call. ‘Mom, I hit a deer!!’ What do I do?’! Also posted before, “My roommate tried to commit suicide” in which the roommate was, ultimately, relatively OK but not after derailing D’s last semester of college.

On a much more upbeat note, from a very confident, competent, mature high school senior D, “OMG, OMG, OMG, Ms X called! What do I do!!!” (Ms. X was the regional admissions officer from D’s ED school from which she’d been deferred and the only reason she’d be calling was to offer D a spot in the freshman class of her university – D finally got it together enough to call her back, hear the offer and accept.)

It wasn’t a phone call, but I got a text the other day that started with “Don’t panic if you look at my bank account balance…”

Well, dang. Seeing these posts makes my year look like a cake walk! <:-P

I got a call, in progress from my S - “I just got hit (on the bicycle) by a car, what do I do?”

Luckily he was ok and the bike was mostly ok. I’ve been on the phone with him at other times when he has nearly been hit. He’s not in a real bike friendly city. I did have him get a blue tooth though, so now he can keep both hands on the wheel :-).
