Things You've Considered Doing In Retirement

For DH and I:

-Teaching
-Running a B & B with a wine and gourmet shop
-Living in a different country each year, studying language and culture
-Getting second graduate degrees

I had considered the B and B route until I seriously discussed the lifestyle with a few owners my age. If the B and B was successful then the work was relentless and people as guests can be pretty demanding. Both owners seemed too tied to the business, unable to leave for breaks.
I currently paint and though I only do it on weekends, most of my work has sold (to strangers yet!) I know enough about the art world to know that I have to learn to market my work and (fingers crossed) I hope to be a semi retired, full time painter in five years time.

Working part time someplace where I would NEVER have to “take the work home” (that means that teaching just won’t work).

Singing more in some kind of chorus.

Visiting kids and going on vacations (no not $10K ones)

-Living in a different country each year, studying language and culture
-Improve painting skill for me(I was very good at it when I was younger) and photography for DH
-Train for the marathon so I can enter the yearly race with DH. He is a runner and I’m not.
-Go to gym everyday so I can say I look better than Arnold in Speedo.
-DH will start a remote business and I will maintain bookeeping for this business.

Small organic farm or a nursery business–specializing in epimediums or hostas.

^^^ funny thumper1 10k vacations

Although I hate the name, I will probably try some Elderhostel courses (not that I would be Elder…) You get to go back to college, no grades, no worries, just fun and learning.

Of course with the current stock market, I will retire at age 109…

Just sitting around with my significant other in our resort home in Aspen.

Edit - Oh, this is on the parenting forum. I just click interesting threads without noting their location.

Building a house on the river.
DH wants to work on a ferryboat.
I’m not sure what I want to do yet.

Steven,
It’s OK for students to post on the parenting forum as long as they follow TOS. :)

As for me: In retirement, I’d like to go on a three-month silent retreat.

I want to travel through Europe. I want to drink wonderful wine, eat fabulous meals, see gorgeous sights, swim in the sea along the coasts. H wants to tour the US. Guess I need to find a new partner in crime! ;)

Not that I would have the wherewithal (financial and otherwise) to do it, but I fantasize about a retirement villa with an open courtyard in which to sip wine (or beer - I am not fussy). I skimmed this book the other day - interesting tidbits from people with more huevos than I:
Retirement Without Borders: How to Retire Abroad–in Mexico, France, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Panama, and Other Sunny, Foreign Places (And the Secret to Making It Happen Without Stress)
by Barry Golson

I would like to have a house in Italy, and a small apartment in NYC, and have all the latest electronic gadgets (except a BB). I hope my girls would have a few kids, so I could spoil them.

Wait… some of us can still think about retirement???

We can fantasize…
H and I would like to sell our house in the northeast and move further north. Open a 60’s coffeehouse with books and music. I also started to make sterling silver jewelry and beads and just in start-up with a small business on side to sell. Its really a hobby.

Move to Quebec and cross country ski all winter… More likely, do what my parents do. They have maintained the home we grew up in, but for a month each spring (overlapping with our kids spring break), they rent a multi-bedroom condo somewhere nice (not too far from ski resorts or the ocean). Their kids and grandkids come and go as spring breaks allow. They don’t usually rent right at the ski resort (1/2 hour drive is fine), thus saving some $$.

Oh yes… a small condo in the northeast for the nice weather months and a small house in NC for the winter months.

Um, a small house in Carpenteria (south of Santa Barbara) where I can walk to the Starbucks, sit on the patio reading the morning paper, facing the morning sun shining over the mountain tops. (btw, sunset over the Channel Islands is nice too!) As for work, maintaining the extended family finances and assets is MORE than enough.

Sell our house in the Boston area and move to Cape Cod - not sure where on the Cape - and just enjoy life with my DH. This is actually what we are planning to do. We figure that if we live there, we are guaranteed that our children will visit us :)

I have had enough of work and the land of Dilbert. I have enough hobbies and activities that I will never have time for all of them. The current interest is photography. I am also interested in almost any outdoor activity. I would love to travel, but that is likely to be highly limited due to finances.
