i think you should go back and read the previous few posts, it was sarcastic

Well yes, so was my post.

this thread looks pretty done to me

RIP my favorite thread

sigh, to think I was the one who killed it T.T

yea, it’s the only that i’ve ever seen last more than 4-5 pages… let’s have a moment of silence…

How did this thread turn into a URM-bashing extravaganza? It started out as a good discussion.

LoL, this thread has more views than the Race one.

no one was bashing URMs; they were bashing race based AA.

lol, we weren’t bashing, we were arguing race by itself as a merit, and it is “what gives you a false sense of security about getting into college” i guess that was the biggest one

Just wanted to say, there are. there are asians to whom some might say, “how did HE get in?” but there’s no AA argument to make about that, so it’s usually dropped after a while and forgotten. But I can assure you that there are many asian applicants to whom many would say behind their backs that it was AA that got them in if they were a URM.

/\ doubt it was aa, the asian applicant pool is very large and very qualified, asians aren’t really urm any more, and since all of them are so qualified they have only made the competition harder on themselves, do you guys think it’s more of a disadvantage to be asian or white? and if you say white, does that include middle eastern?

^yes, my point exactly

No!!! My thread! I shall revive thee!

The important statistic is not what absolute proportion gets rejected, it’s holding everything else equal what proportion gets rejected.

But blacks still have a higher admit rate than the overall applicant group.

I know a black kid who had an 1850 SAT with a 4.00, who got into MIT of all schools. His best case scenario would be having an 800 for Math, and then a 650 and 400 for the other sections, but I think the 400 would be a turn off for any top school.

BananaSandwich15, I think that’s a super-smart way to put it. People need to realize that the majority of URM’s get rejected just like the rest of us, even if the percentage rejected is a little lower.

A little bit?

U Chicago - 50% higher black acceptance rate
Notre Dame - 90% higher
Tufts - 100% higher
MIT - 150% higher

Okay, so MIT has a, what, 20% acceptance rate for blacks as opposed to 8%? Those are still long odds.

Blacks actually have a 25% acceptance rate there. (So it’s a 5% difference)

Yes, it’s long odds, but other people have much longer odds. Unless you think that the black applicants are all that much more qualified than everybody else, it’s clear they’re getting a large advantage from their race. It doesn’t guarantee you admission, but having a 1/4 chance is more akin to the odds of getting into Notre Dame.
