Thinking of buying a sauna. Does anyone have one? Good buy? Or not?

DH’s bday is coming up and he’s always wanted a sauna. Does anyone have one? What are the pros and cons of having one at home?

I’m looking at something like this one:

I use an infrared sauna about once a week. If I could sneak one in the house I would definitely buy one.

Does he want an infared sauna or a traditional one?

I am interested in this, too. But have never used an infrared one, only the traditional saunas at gyms and spas. How does the infrared differ experientially?

We are leaning towards a ceramic infrared sauna but we’ve just started researching. The only type I’ve ever used is a traditional one at the gym.

I love the idea of a sauna. Relax in the thereputic steam. In reality, I’m bored and uncomfortable after about 5 minutes. And then I start sweating.

So kind of like massages, I like the idea far better than the reality. I guess I’m not the serene and relaxed type!

We have a sauna in our home. In the 11 years that we have lived here, I have never used it one time…and I’m Finnish. I think my husband has used it once. It’s a lovely sauna, but in our case, a waste of space.

Wow, @busdriver11 , when I went to Finland I couldn’t believe the centrality of saunas in people’s lives. Every mall has a sauna accessories store!

I guess I’m a loser as a Finn. Don’t like saunas, and don’t drink near enough. Don’t like jumping in ice cold water either. But I do like hot tubs.

Nix the ice cold water (I mean, I did it in Finland and still regret it) and I could go full Finn

Then that would lead you to heavy vodka, introversion and hot tubs. Yeah, I could go with that

We bought an infrared sauna over a decade ago. I am the only one who uses it , but I do love it
It makes me feel great when my asthma is bothering me.

@lje62, I have asthma, too. I didn’t realize the sauna could help that. That’s a plus. DH works out regularly and likes to finish with the sauna.

If your husband enjoys saunas, go for it. It sounds like he will get a good use out of it. I would be hesitant to buy something for Mr. B that he thought he would enjoy but has never really tried.

We have a steam shower – H had it installed last year for my bday. It’s heaven.

Never had one in Wisconsin. Moved to Florida and our then 25 year old house came with one in the pool bath (outside shower head and sauna where a shower would be indoors)- outside entrance. Advantage to never having to clean another shower stall. The inspector said it worked. We use it to store stuff- such as leftover tile and pavers. Here we can get hot and sweaty sitting outdoors in the summer then jump in the pool.

My parents built a house when I was in high school and had a sauna installed (in the basement). My brother loved it and used it almost every day in the winter. I think my father used it some. I never used it. I rarely go into the saunas when available (on a cruise, at a spa, at the gym).

Pros? For those who like them, it is certainly more convenient to have one at home. Cons? Your electric bill will be much higher.
