Thinking of transferring from UCSC to ASU. Thoughts?

I’m a current first year attending UCSC as a Computer Science major. I’m considering transferring to ASU because it would be cheaper and the comp sci program at ASU has a higher ranking. Any thoughts or opinions on this? Also how hard is it to transfer to ASU?

I don’t understand, how much will you be saving? ASU OOS COA is like 40k, so higher than UCSC instate.

Graduate rankings have to do with papers published by professors and the grad students and grad and research influence and reputation. There aren’t any official rankings for undergrad.

There are 1,400 undergrads in CS at ASU. I don’t know the number at UCSC but maybe do you. I tend to think smaller is better for undergrad instruction. But I would think either school would be good.

Previous posts indicate that you are a California resident. How is ASU less expensive than UCSC?

For a CS major, UCSC’s relative proximity to Silicon Valley may make it easier to find internships and post-graduation jobs.

Under the WUE program I’d be paying around 23k a year. I’m currently paying 33K a year at UCSC.

No, under WUE (if ASU allows), you’d be paying 150% of tuition, so your total cost would be about $30k.

The tuition thru WUE is actually HIGHER than UC tuition…so “savings” are really whatever minor differences might be (might not be) with R&B choices, etc.

Instate COA is $25k…once you add 50% of instate tuition (which is $10k)…then you’re adding $5k to instate and you get $30k.

edit…WUE is only good for select majors at select campuses. I don’t think CS can be done at the main Tempe campus…I think it’s at the polytech campus.

I see. You know that the main campus in Tempe is not included in WUE?

“WUE programs are limited to select majors at the Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic and West campuses. See the complete list of participating programs”

By ‘programs’ they mean majors so you will have to examine if the ones on offer at the campuses listed are going to work out for you.

I wonder why you didn’t start at CC or go to CSU if money is the issue here. What is really driving this?

https://students.asu.edu/admission/wue shows that WUE tuition is similar to that of UC in-state tuition. Also, as noted above, it is only for some majors at the subsidiary campuses that appear to be mainly for non-traditional students and commuters.
