what is better… having a 4.0 (93) GPA with around 5 classes a semester or having a 3.7 (91) GPA with around 8-10 classes a semester.

It’s better to have a 4.0 GPA with 8-10 classes.

All selective colleges want students to take the most rigorous program offered at their school. If the average student’s load at a high school is 8-10 classes, the student taking 5 classes, but with a higher average, would have a relatively weak program in comparison to other students. On the other hand, if the average student’s load is 5 classes, the student taking 8-10 classes, with a lower average, would be seen as having an exceedingly rigorous program.

i think i am the only person who has applied to a ivy school in the last 20 years so there isnt any “usually amount of classes”

Your school doesn’t have some sort of limit?

I would take enough classes so that you’re taking the most rigorous courseload available, without sacrificing your performance (and the educational benefit you receive) from any one. You have to decide what that means.

Harvard will know how rigorous your course load is because your counselor has to indicate how rigorous your course load was. Make sure you take the rigorous classes available, but make it manageable enough to keep a respectable GPA. It would be nice to know your ECs as well.

If “EC” means extra Curricular

I dont have too many as my school is six days a week and is from 7:30 AM -8:30 PM most days.

i have taken the most challenging classes even though that only includes 3 honors and 2 AP (which is all they offer in the four years)

Yep, EC means extracurricular. Wow, your days at school are long. You should be good if you have taken every honors and AP course your school offers.

This isn’t actually a “great” question.
