Starbright, that’s terrific (and I like her blog, too).

It reminded me of my all-time favorite Anna Quindlen quote, “They are not long, the days of construction paper and gilded rigatoni.” Which comes from an achingly wonderful Mother’s Day column of hers, also containing the line, “Each day we move a little closer to the sidelines of their lives, which is where we belong, if we do our job right.”

OK, I’m back from my Kleenex break after watching the video. All of you out there whose kids don’t drive yet, take advantage of the chances you have to talk and listen while you’re in the car–that time ends all too soon as well.

A co-worker e-mailed me today, apologizing for cutting back to part-time (she has “Irish twins” - 11 mos apart) I sent her the link and hope it helps her realize she made the correct choice. And then I called my chicks, just to hear their voices.

Wow. It made me tear up.
It’s so weird to think I’ll be going off to college next year, and my mother’s always been there for me… and the video just… I guess it hit a nerve.

Dg5052, thank you for saying that. I was just lamenting yesterday how much driving I have to do these days! After reading your post, I had entirely different take on our one hour Thursday night round trip.

At the end of the video which my wife and both watched together, our 10-month-old daughter sat up in bed (we’ve been trying to get her to sleep for a half hour) and said “da da da da.” We both laughed in love and also frustration, but I think felt very much the sense of this video…

I had ulterior motives for not encouraging them to drive.
SOmedays it is the only time my 17 yr old talks to me.

I should send this to my mom so she’ll start to cherish the time I talk her ear off on the phone now that I’m living across the country for grad school. :(

Starbright, misses it? You mean, misses having a smaller, wide-eyed-wonder one around? Oh, we did. That’s why our distribution is D, college soph; S1, h.s. jr.; and S2 . . . kindergarten. :)
