This is completely random but actually pretty important.

In the case of a personal security-related emergency (i.e. attempted assault or battery on/near campus) which should I call? 911 or campus security?

I know both will probably not be able to come in time to prevent the attack from happening, but which would be the most reliable to call?

i would pick the campus popo. C’mon they have batons and pepper spray!

Just make sure they don’t hit you “on accident”.

Call Batman! He goes to Cal!

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, Batman!

Don’t bother calling 911 from a cell phone. 911 from a cell phone first routes you to a regional 911 call center (sometimes it takes 2 or 3 minutes for them to even answer here). From there they ask where you’re located. They then route you to the city or county’s 911 dispatch. If it’s an on-campus incident, the City of Berkeley 911 will then route you to UCPD 911. In short, it takes forever.

At CalSO the UCPD officer gave us this number and said to put it in our phones. It’s the direct line to reach UCPD’s 911–you skip all the nonsense described above. Don’t call it unless there’s an emergency.

(510) 642-3333

The officer said to use that number even if you’re off-campus, but still close by. UCPD will probably respond faster than City of Berkeley PD. UCPD’s primary responsibility is for the campus itself and areas within a one mile radius, but UCPD officers can exercise peace officer powers anywhere in California.

Here’s the policy:

[quote]
Regardless of jurisdictional boundaries, in the case of a serious in-progress crime, UCPD will respond and work to stabilize the situation prior to determining which agency has primary jurisdiction./quote

In short, if you’re anywhere near campus and there’s a crime in progress, call (510) 642-3333.

Cal 510 642 3333 as noted above.

For some reason I also have 510 642 6760 in my phone under UCPD but as a mobile number. Does anyone know/remember what that number is for…?

[Let me google that for you](<a href=“LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You”>LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You)

It appears to be the 24-hour non-emergency number.

^ lol that’s awesome

The numbers are also on the back of your student ID.
