So… here is the story: I took a november SAT last year. No prep. Marching Band competition the night before. And I got Reading: 690, Math: 800, Writing:690 (Essay 10). Just looking at SAT score, how do I stand? I need to take the SAT again (I need 2 subject tests), but my dream schools are MIT, Brown, CMU, and the like for computer science. I am kind of freaked out that I will never get a better score and that will prevent me from getting in… I know its stupid, but looking at the admit rates, I can’t help but cringe.

If you want to be super-competitive at top CS schools, there is nothing wrong with taking the test again. You could gain a marginal edge by getting the CR score up. However, I don’t think your SAT score can make or break your application at this point.

It always helps to top 700, especially in CR and Math. I would study up for CR and give it one more try. But certainly your test score isn’t all that counts. But a better test score never hurt anyone!

OP - if you develop a plan after perusing this forum you may be able to significantly increase your score. It could definitely help a lot. Its probably worth your time.

Can anyone explain how subject tests work? My current impression is that you take the SAT and then you take the subject tests in the same sitting. Can you take multiple subject tests at once?

The SAT and Subject tests cannot be taken in the same sitting. It is one or the other. You can take up to 3 subject tests in one sitting. Most schools would like to see Math 2, a science and a language/history/social science. If you plan to go into a STEM major, definitely Math 2 and a science.

OHHH… Well this changes things a bit. I think then I will take the ACT in June, the subject tests and the SAT again in October. Thank you very much

No… there is only one October date for the SAT, right? You can either take the regular SAT then OR you can take up to 3 subject tests on that date. You can’t do both in October. Also, be sure you look to see what subject tests are offered on the date you want to take them. There are a couple that historically have not been offered at every date for some reason (World History used to be like that, not sure if it still is). You can look on the College Board site and see.
