Hi all! I’m currently in this process of figuring out what I want to study in college. It is difficult to compress my interests into something comprehensible, so I think I’ll just write out what I like and hope you guys could help me out
I love learning about pop culture. ← at first I thought it’s sociology, but I’m not sure…
I love everything you can find on https://www.tvtropes.org/ .
I love math. I love statistics.
I love memes (I’m serious - it’s an interesting way to spread information!)
I love all aspects of theater and film.
Somehow, I want to combine my interests into some kind of combination of either double majors and/or minors, or maybe make up my own major focused on these things.
You seem to like creative kind of fields, do look for something in that.
Your major doesn’t have to combine or represent all of your interests. It doesn’t have to be the sum of you as a person. It can’t. It just needs to be something that you are interested in - maybe a combination of one or two or a few things that you like.
I love learning about pop culture; I love TV tropes and memes, too. I also love statistics. I also love video games and history and creative writing and animals. I majored in psychology. Some psychologists can study pop culture, I suppose, but the traditional study of psychology has little to do with media and culture; it does involve statistics, sometimes at a pretty high level.
You’re a complex person with complex, varied interests - your major is not necessarily going to cover every single one. What you need to decide is which of those things you really want to study academically for four years. Thinking about the kinds of careers you may want to enter, and what skills you want to learn in your major, may help a little (although keep in mind that most majors don’t lead directly to any one career or set of them).
