But what is calculus??

I am a sophmore taking precalc next year, and I keep hearing this word calc and calculus having no idea what it even means or what the topics include. Anyone simple explanation would be appreciated.

Very very hard to define, but its the study of infinitesimal stuff. You learn to calculate exact speeds/velocities, volumes of random stuff like a lamp base, and many others; very useful for physics, economics. I probably shamed the beauty of Calculus with my poor definition, but its kind of hard to explain. If you want a brief introduction, I recommend Calculus for Dummies or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculus .

Alright i kinda see, and one more timeless question How difficult is ap calc ab? I know it may be hard to answer because it probably depends on your math ability…i’d say mine are a little above par.

In a nutshell, calculus is the study of change. The most prominent theme to analyze change in calculus is shrinking the thing that is changing to an infinitesimally small value (dx – a term you will see later. This idea also hints at the idea of limits).

I’m in BC calc, and I feel like AB would be the easiest thing ever. Of course, I’m a strong math student, but we move almost TWICE as fast as the AB class. That’s a lot faster.

Well, I take regular level math classes and next year my precalc class will also be a regular level class, will this be enough prep for Ap calc ab…because at my school they want you to take precalc honors inorder to take ap calc ab

Oh, only regular class levels? Eh… why not just step it up and take precalc honors next year so you can confidently take AB calc?

I know this may counteract my apparent desire to take ap calc ab but i was told that precalc honors is extremely difficult without the knowledge of algebra 2 honors, and the deadline to waive into a class has passed. Are the skills learned in pre calc extremely important for calc?

More so for BC than AB. As long as you get a STRONG grasp of trigonometry and functions during precalc, you’ll probably be alright. Although, algebra II skills are pretty important too. Being able to work well and manipulate equations is pretty important.

calculus is fun lol. To me, it is at least. Think of it as an advanced level of algebra/algebra II + a little bit of trig.
