So. Assuming my teacher and counselor recs are mailed and received before I submit my app online, will the NYU admissions office automatically create a file for me? Even though it will be the first time they receive information that I’m an applicant?

I know this sounds weird. :o

Hi, I can’t remember at what point NYU assigns an ID # for the NYU applicant. Maybe after payment of the Application fee? This is somewhat vague for me now, but most of the colleges give directions to put your name, Applicant ID #, DOB, Name of High School (for some).
I remember sonny did not put the latter in some forms and the Applicant ID# was only provided sometimes to the counselor and teachers for their recommendations.

However, the applicant’s full name and DOB at the minimum were provided (usually in the top right corner of the forms he filled out).

Somehow, all the Common Applications and Forms were received all right and I know some recommendations got to Commonapp.org before sonny finished his application and submitted it online.

He only experienced problems with missing recommendations (sent out both earlier and later than his application) in his application to the CUNY MaCaulay Honors program (which had its own system for applications). That was a mess with sonny going back to his teachers and counselor to re-send material (even though his recommenders were all very responsible and prompt).

So, I think you should be safe. Maybe you can provide an applicant ID # (if you have one) for your recommenders to include in their online submission. Though I have to say the online submission is new to me since my son went the route of old-fashioned forms.

The experience with the Common App went without hitches for sonny (everything sync’ed together even with the different timing). Just find out if an applicant id # is needed by contacting the Common App people or reading their instructions.

Sorry I just re-read your post. You would not have gotten the ID # (if it is provided) since you did not finish the app and submit it with the fee. I think you are still OK. They tend to be able to file correctly based on full name and DOB or High School.
Files are started before they receive your application, e.g., for standardized scores like SATs and ACTs.

Okay, awesome! Thanks for the helpful response. :)
