I was lookin through the USC topics and I heard a lot about how people think that USC is only considered well-known in Southern California. I’d like to broaden the topic to any school that is considered prestigious only in a certain region.

Why do people say that these days? With the internet, can’t anyone find out info about just any school across the nation, regardless of region? What’s the deal with “USC not being well known in the east coast” or “Northwestern not well-known in the west coast” or “UCLA not well known outside of california” etc…?

In fact, I live in Rhode Island and I know these schools pretty well (or at least read a lot of info about them). Should it be taken with a grain of salt when someone says that so-and-so school is only respected/known in so-and-so region?

With ~3000 colleges and universities in this country it’s a pretty good bet that >90% are not well known.

Actually, Northwestern is pretty well-known in (Southern) California, especially among theater and film folks.

Yes, with the internet, one can find out info about any school across the nation. But very people in the real world are all that interested in colleges, unless they are in academia. Most people on the street know their state flagships and other schools near them, they may have vaguely heard of some of the “majors” such as HYP as being really good schools, and then they pay attention to the names of the schools that they hear on ESPN or sports channels.

So, yes, by that token, the average person on the East Coast doesn’t really know Northwestern and the average person in the midwest has heard of USC for sports and maybe pretty girls.

That’s ok, though. Who cares? The average person (who doesn’t live in Pennsylvania) wouldn’t know the difference between Penn and Penn State, but so what? Wouldn’t stop me from going to or sending my kids to Penn.

Ooops, actually, UCLA is well-known outside of California. I dare to say it’s one of few universities renown internationally. USC, without a shade of doubt, is also well-known outside of Southern California.

But, yeah, it’s true that Los Angeles is where both institutions are most respected.

I live in Georgia and USC is my dream school.

“Should it be taken with a grain of salt when someone says that so-and-so school is only respected/known in so-and-so region?”

Oh yeah.

I think the big state school is known really well in that region such as UGA or UF.

renown >> renowned

Why can’t I edit the upper post?

I think USC is well-known in the northeast, but as sort of a tacky nouveau-riche school.

what… how’s that UT
