This Sucks

I just finished a weeklong trip touring a bunch of East Coast schools, including Yale. Beforehand I hadn’t even been interested in Yale–I’ve always kind of subscribed to the Ivy League stereotype–but after touring the school I fell in love with everything about it.

But once I was on the road leaving New Haven it hit me that I will never, ever be accepted to Yale. I have a fairly good SAT score (2170) and I plan on taking it at least once more and a 3.5 GPA which is going up. My EC’s are good–tons and tons of theater/drama related stuff, as well as a smattering of other clubs/volunteering. But that would never get me into Yale.

I think Yale should post some sort of warning on their website: “Do not visit us if you don’t have a 4.0 and a 2400.” Not to be elitist, but just so nobody else like me has to have their heart broken.

um, i didn’t have a 4.0 GPA/2400 SAT score and i got into yale. i was like you and thought i had no chance in hell of getting accepted…yet i’m going there in the fall.
so, don’t give up and say you’ve lost already. take a freakin’ risk, because trying and failing is worse than not trying at all.

well you’re in good company, in terms of having no shot at Yale. there are many other schools out there, check em out! :)

Ummm…yeah, they totally should! Because they only accept 4.0/2400’s!!! All hundred or so of them.

In truth, its almost impossible to get into Yale not because of test scores or gpa. Its because they admit students for reasons nobody understands. When you have so many qualified candidates it comes down to… well god knows what.

I second mangoho’s comment. I got into Yale, but had something like a 3.82 and a 2250. I really didn’t think I’d get in. Since there are loads of people who have 4.0s and 2300+ scores, Yale has to put a lot of weight on the subjective parts of your application. Since it sounds like you have quite strong ECs and such, I wouldn’t say you have zero chance. The most important thing is just to stand out and show the admissions committee how you will really bring something unique to Yale. So I would encourage you to apply!

Yeah, I was probably being a bit overdramatic. I should have clarified that I do still plan on applying, possibly early action. It’s just unfortunate that I had to become so enamored with a school that happens to have virtually (or is it not virtually, but actually?) the lowest acceptance rate in the country.

It’s the same for me. I didn’t think I had a prayer honestly, and because of that I tried not to look at Yale too much. I was checking decisions only because I made a bet with my friend saying that I wouldn’t get in. Then lo and behold, the bulldogs! I will be going this fall.

You never know what can happen!

Hey, better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all, right?
:p

Anyhow, never lose hope. I seriously thought I had no shot at Yale, which came after a rejection and 2 waitlists from some of my other schools. But it happened. :)

(By the way, my SAT was a 2250)

Haha @LameUsername. I feel the same way too.
I fell in love with Yale like a couple of years ago and after seeing the scary acceptance rate, I really wish I was in love with the state school.

But, anything is possible my friend. I plan applying SCEA as well. You never know until you try.

Make your essays shine. Anything is possible.

(forget about the ending of the video… just listen to the message of the song)

i can personally attest to the fact that ESSAYS will really distinguish your application.
give it your best, and i mean your very best; then if u get rejected there should be no regrets. good luck!

well I’m a sophomore and I’m already obsessed with the ivies. Yet I’m having major trouble trying to make myself ivy material. But I guess “ivy material” isn’t a proper term because admission officers claim to find something different in each individual.

I’m a drama geek too btw

but you shouldn’t give up! Keep going with the drama and the subjects you are most passionate about. Like literally, throw yourself into your passions. Yale will notice.

I think my essays got me in. My EC’s were not that good.

I was accepted to Yale with a 2180. Admissions are so totally insane and random you have pretty much as good a chance as somebody with a 2300.

Umm…I had a 4.0/2110 and 780/720/710 SAT IIs, so don’t worry.

Would you pls share what you wrote about in your essay? Thanks.

Sn, your stats for both SAT and GPA are both better than mine…

this is the first time i’ve posted here (but i’ve been lurking for basically this entire school year, hah) but i just feel that now that i’ve been accepted to yale i can say that this idea that you have to be perfect to be accepted is totally off. from your original post, it seems like we had almost identical stats so just take a chance and apply (i still don’t know how i got in, but the admissions committee obviously thought i deserved to be there). hope that helps.
