Supposedly, I haven’t tried it. But it may be of interest to many trying to decide which test(s) to take.
I thought it’d be a helpful benchmark for younger students considering using this for me to take it! I took the verbal test. I’m a senior, and I scored a 790 on CR and a 780 on W when I took the (obviously old) SAT as a junior.
Here are my results:
“You scored a 9 (out of 10) on the questions related to the New SAT! This translates to a 780.”
It turns out I got only one question wrong of the New SAT questions (9/10), but on the old SAT questions I got 2/6 correct (???).
Anyway, from my experience, a good amount of these questions - mainly the ones meant to be ‘old SAT questions’ are not exactly indicative of the old SAT questions (cannot comment on their relationship to new SAT questions), but this is just from my subjective feelings.
I know as I was taking the test, there were times when I went “Huh?” (the passages seemed awkwardly/poorly written to me) or felt that all of the phrasings they suggested were fairly bad.
Would welcome more data on this!
The reading comprehension passages in this test are appalling, there are only two very easy sentence completions, and the math questions represent only a small fraction of the material covered by each test. The essay is ignored completely, as is the different overall timing of the sections. This is just a gimmick.
^ that may be, the author is a test prep company/book owner.
But the new SAT essay is optional, isn’t that right? Not sure how any online test would measure such a thing anyway.
I know Gruber’s books pretty well. They have good points and not so good points. This test is dreadful. I’m not saying someone else could have done a better 30-minute evaluation. f you want a reasonable estimate, you have to do a complete practice test of each version. You can’t get an overall view of the situation with a 30-minute test.
You are exactly right that the new SAT essay is optional. However, the OLD Sat essay is NOT OPTIONAL, and the essay score counts for 1/3 of the writing score. If, for example, you are a really bad essay writer, you might prefer to take the new format and not do the essay. You can’t do that with the old format. This is not taken into account in any way by Gruber’s sound-bite (among other things).
