Hey i recieved likely letters from both schools and was wondering, as a science person which school would be better. Any input is appreciated ThANKS!

What do you want to major in? What do you want to do after school? How confident are you that you will receive acceptance to both schools?

^ Well, the OP received likely letters from both schools, which means he’s basically guaranteed acceptance to them unless he gets horrible grades second semester or engages in criminal activity.

It depends on what science you want to study, but I would argue Duke is better for science. We have a great medical center on campus if you are interested in biomedical or biochemistry research, and if you are interested in ecology research, there is the Duke Forest (which is also technically part of campus) and the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort (you can study there for a semester or during the summer). I heard the chemistry department is great as well, and they have a nice building called the French Family Science Center (named after Melinda French Gates). For environmental science and earth sciences, Duke has an entire school, called Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. Although it is a graduate-level school, they offer many courses for undergrads and treat them well. I don’t know much about the physics department.

But to be honest, go where you feel is the best fit for you. I’m sure Columbia has an amazing science program as well; I’m just not familiar with it because I never applied to Columbia.

Hope this helps! Congrats on getting into two great schools!

science person= what kind of science?

An explanation of your particular interests may help us help you.

If you are science-oriented but do not, at this time, have a particular focus (understandable!) I can tell you that Dike has strong science programs, in general.

I’m guessing both will have good enough science, but the cities and campuses are TOTALLY different!

Choose based on fit, not the supposed quality of department/majors. Both are strong in the sciences. I chose Duke over Columbia because I preferred the sense of class unity and pride and felt more a sense of community as well as great enthusiasm for sports. Columbia is more of a do-it-yourself intellectual type atmosphere where there is a more independent-type streak while living in one of the largest and most vibrant cities in the world. Some prefer a Duke-type atmosphere, while others prefer Columbia. It’s personal preference so I would recommend visiting both.

Can’t go wrong with either one. Congrats, from one (former) Syosset kid to another. Go Braves!

Hello! I also have received a likely letter from the Columbia University and I am so happy! Syossetkid, where are you from? Maybe we can see each other next year :D
