From entering university as a freshman (a few decades ago) to graduation took me 8 semesters in 4 years. At the time, the 4 year graduation rate was probably only about a third.

Took full course loads, averaging more than the nominal 15 credit units per semester (only the first semester was below that, due to not getting into some classes that were full of students with higher registration priority and not knowing the system that well).
Did not fail any courses.
Did not need any remedial courses as a freshman (more than half of the freshmen at the time needed a remedial English composition course).
Paid attention to courses needed for major and other graduation requirements.
Did not change major late.

I finished a BA in math in 3 years. I took two courses one summer and overloaded my last two semesters. I also managed to pick up a physics minor along the way. Every single course I took counted towards something, either liberal arts requirements, major, or minor, none were wasted. It wasn’t very hard to stay motivated because I loved what I was studying.
