Thoughts about John Carroll University?

My son received a good financial offer for JCU. They’ve done a great job in wooing him since he was accepted. We visited the school and had a positive impression. It’s a small, but attractive campus and we like the fact that it is in a city rather than a dot among the cornfields. Cleveland is a better city than its reputation might have you believe- low cost of living, lots of culture and good restaurants, etc. But those are just our impressions based on a couple of brief visits. I’m curious to hear the experiences of any current or former students about the school.

I can’t answer your question, but they have an impressive list of alumni!

My D had a few friends who went to John Carroll and had great experiences. One of her favorite HS teachers is now a professor there.

I grew up within walking distance of John Carroll University. My niece attended and says great things about her education there.

As you know, it’s located in a nice suburban area east of Cleveland.

It’s a Jesuit college, and I really think the Jesuits have higher education well thought out (my own kid graduated from a different Jesuit college).

It’s also a very short distance to Geraci’s Restaurant which has some of the best pizza I’ve ever had!

ETA…also close to Bialy’s Bagels!

And yes, Cleveland is a very under appreciated city. Lots of arts, a decent enough baseball team, a good basketball team…and a football team that we fondly say “maybe next year”.

Maybe they can arrange for an accepted student visit day and he can sit in on some classes and talk to some students.

My older son went to John Carroll and graduated in 2018. He had a good experience there both academically and socially, and went on to be successful in grad school and afterwards.

My son’s first choice is JCU but he’s worried it might be too small, even though he wants a small school. He got max scholarship money and got into the honors program. But he’s bummed that freshman can’t have cars on campus next year because he wanted to be able to explore Cleveland while he’s there.

Can he use uber? He should also check the John Carroll folks to see what sorts of transportation they might provide to get to events or things in Cleveland.

And he will be able to walk to great pizza (Geracis) and bagels (bialys).

I’m not sure I would recommend a car anyway.

John Carroll is the alma mater of the legendary Tim Russert. You can go on to do great things in life from JCU.

45 minutes by tram to downtown. But the important thing is that he won’t be in it alone. He’ll be a college kid! They’ll figure it out as a group. And he’s got 4 years to explore Cleveland. No rush. Let him explore John Carroll and get to know everyone there first.

Too small? Some of the most elite colleges in the country are smaller than JCU’s 2300 . . . and a lot more isolated.
