you’re just frustrated that you always have to be on the bottom

dear cc,

i took my math 3a midterm today. first midterm at UCLA…

it was tricky… i don’t know how i did but i’m hoping the curve will do me some good.
what a way to start off… who has weinstein for math3a? what did you guys think?

love,
jeyday

my math32a midterm returned to me with triple digits

aw yea my first midterm too

wow triple digits, the average of my math 32b class was 38 out of 101

yay i’m so happy i did better than i thought on my math midterm! 41/50… not too bad for what i was expecting ! :D

apparently most of the class did HORRIBLY and if that raw score is curved i’ll get an A…

ok… so basically, there use to be 2 chem 14a lectures… and now there’s only ONE… what the heck?? can they seriously put only ONE lecture available? i mean last year they put 3 for winter '09

Expect there to be a few changes in the classes available between now and enrollment time. It’s good to have an idea of what kind of classes you want now but don’t rely on it too much.

If you are really worried try e-mailing one of the professors or the department to be sure what is going on.

hellogoodbye,

you also have to take into consideration that not all the people from the two Chem 14A classes are going to continue on… there will be those that don’t pass and have to retake it, and then there will be those who became frightened of chemistry (and science altogether) and retreat to North campus… in any case, the chem department is REALLY good at making sure everyone that needs to take a certain class, can - if you have scheduling issues it can usually be resolved, like Nit suggested, by talking to the department (which, btw is located on the 4th floor of Young.)

thanks for the responses :). I emailed scerri, but I doubt I’ll get a response, haha.

k so he responded and said “not that he knows of” and why I need an extra lecture… hopefully they will… crosses fingers

are you just worried that you won’t get into the class or is it conflicting with another class you want to take? honestly, i really don’t think there’s anything to worry about if there’s just the one class unless it conflicts with something else…

@ckings: conflicting w/ another class + I go home sometimes and need to leave by 3:30…

Like mme-lin did! :D

Very funny GrassPuppet. How does it feel to rest in the bowels of South Campus knowing fully well that your skills are limited if not mediocre? That your pathetic attempts at wooing me have translated to ad hominem attacks that fail to affect me just like your affections towards me? Ah, yes because we know that North Campus is a haven for those who have failed to acquire the glory of a math/science degree whose curriculum whose more technical difficulties will outweigh the ‘strength’ of a Bachelor of Arts degree? And you have no reference at all to the possibility that I’m more interested in comparative literature, English, political science, democracy and capitalism, paradigm shifts, actual change over time, the whole of Western civilization, and Romance languages? Did you ever consider the possibility that my interests aren’t entirely technical or limited to that sphere? Of course not. I hope you’re embittered enough to wallow in your own bell jar and reflect in its own acidic gas. (That’s a reference to Plath by the way if you care.) Give yourself a break and read a book.

I seriously wished that I had gotten scared of South Campus… I don’t really take much joy in it anymore (sadly since I’m doing the grad school thing…) I so would’ve loved to have majored in English or Music or something along those lines - stupid biochemistry… walks off muttering to herself

hellogoodbyee,

that sucks. good luck. you may just have to wait to take it in the spring then or not take the other class.

so now that the first quarter for all freshman is over, and most of us have gotten all our grades…

personally, i think this quarter went by REALLY fast… and classes weren’t as competitive as i thought they would be. i kind of like the intellectual environment – it’s not TOO hard where you’re struggling to get an A but it’s nice to know everyone cares about their grades and at least TRIES to do well (unlike high school…)

i think my high school prepared me well for university, at first i was anxious and thought to myself, wow i’m going to be taking classes at a top university and competing with high achievers from all over the nation, but it’s not really that bad… i definitely could have done better, if i had procrastinated less… haha. but it’s going to be more difficult next quarter because i have more science-y type classes.

my grades are:
art&arch10: A+
educ92f: A
math3a: A-
hist2c: B+

lol i got one of each grade from the top four possible
i wasn’t expecting a B+ in history since it’s ruiz but my TA was a b**** and since TAs control 100% of your grade, that sucked… even after all that extra credit! art&arch10 was super easy; as long as you attend every lecture and take decent notes. didn’t really try too hard in that class. weinstein was an okay prof for math, wish i had dai though, heard he was a lot easier. weinstein’s tests were sort of challenging. educ92f was all common sense, just busy work.

how was this quarter like for you guys? especially freshmen since it was the first one…

not trying to make you feel bad. but you don’t feel the competitiveness because you took easy GEs…and math 3a??? pre-meds, poliscis, econ majors are pretty competitive…management is even worse, and lets pray for the engineers. lucky you that you dont have to take those classes cuz if you do they just might change your thoughts about competitiveness at UCLA. and yes i took harder classes last year when i started my freshman fall quarter, and i didnt feel the competitiveness until I began to take econ classes. you’ll get there.

^ I second that.

Hater what Econ classes are you taking winter qtr?

haters, you’re right. i know it’ll get more competitive from here, but i also did mention that when i said next quarter will be more difficult because i’ll have more science-y type classes. i’m just saying it’s not as competitive as i thought it was, even the easy GEs. the profs don’t give out A’s to EVERYONE and if i get an A among top students, that is something, even though it’s easier to get it when a class is an easy GE. i just mean the general feel of competitiveness isn’t as harsh as i thought it would be. i most definitely know the upper divs are competitive, especially if i stick with science and go through with the weeder courses like the LS series… haha
