haters,

The poli sci students are competitive?

Man, either I’m smart or things have changed since the long long ago when I was there, because I never found the poli sci students that competitive. The econ students, however…

I think the competitive courses are in the begining-middle of the curriculum … at least for those with technical majors. Towards the end, the material is more difficult but competitiveness decreases.

LS series is one of the most competitive courses … you’ll have lots ahead … sorry to say but AA10 and Education 92F are two of the easiest courses at UCLA. Hope you’re ready for the science ones.

By the way, why is there extra credit in college??

dear jeyday,
congrats on your grades and finishing your first quarter. excellent way to get the momentum going. good luck with your next! =)

I’m so glad I finished out the LS series… came out relatively unscathed - A-, B+ and an A

UCLAri,

Well, I guess I wasn’t talking about competitiveness in its traditional sense. I was approaching it from a more popularity viewpoint. Because you know as well as I do that PoliSci classes always fill up before second pass. Since I’m not a PoliSci major, I can’t really say its competitive in its traditional sense or not. However, since I am an Econ major, I can personally testify that it is pretty competitive. Sadly…the overachievers get lower grades than us procrastinators.

Boelter,

There was even extra credit in grad school. I dunno, I don’t think you can escape it.

Hater,

I think the real problem is that poli sci classes have no barriers to entry. That lets anyone, even non-majors, take it to just fill some units.

Actually I don’t think that is the case. Although Econ has no classes that will count as a GE (altho last year I think Econ 2 counted for something). PoliSci only has 3-4 classes that fulfills your GE, the rest count toward the major and minor. Econ has classes that are open to all like Econ 1, 2, and 107. Maybe the materials in PoliSci are just easier, in the sense that it fits more to the liberal arts minded people?

PS I like your “barriers to entry”, made me think of pure vs. monopolistic competition…I hated that class.

hater,

You may be right. However, I was always under the impression that upper div classes don’t count for much for any other majors. Then again, it’s been a while since I dealt with those specifics.

You may definitely be right about the classes being more generally “easy,” as well.

Oh, and regarding BtE, competition models didn’t get to me until we started dealing with kinked curves and whatnot.

well times have changed, my friend, they start teaching advanced concepts really early now…in an effort to weed out the wannabes i guess.

That’s good. I’ve always been a fan of making the social science classes at UCLA “tougher” to keep up with the times.

The truth is that a good poli sci or econ education should be as quantitative as much as it is qualitative.

i think econ has a pretty good balance between quantitative vs. qualitative…polisci is like 95% qualitative with maybe polisci 6 and 30 involving math…maybe one more class.

hater,

That’s about right. Since I did my graduate work at a very quant-heavy program, I tend to believe in more quant. Then again, quant can sometimes be used as a substitute for decent theory, so who knows if I’m right…

where did you go to grad school, if you dont mind my asking?

ari goes to ucsd

dear mme-lin,

thanks! good luck to you too and everyone else as we start winter quarter 2009!

update:

dear diary, if I could go back in time, i’d tell myself to enjoy high school, and not get so excited about ucla, because, once I do actually take classes/midterms/finals, I’ll then realize how easy lovely HS was. sigh.

update:

dear diary,

if i could go back in time, i would be way more assertive with my roommates from the beginning because my roommates and their friends and boyfriends are here all the time and they act like they own the room, and no matter how hard i try to be assertive, i seem more and more like a b****, and the less and less they care.

ANYWAY,

i got all the classes i wanted for this quarter (LS2 w/phelan, math3c w/weisbart, psych10 w/smurda) and i am going to have to work hard this quarter! looking forward to summer… (even though i have session A summer school haha)

how’s everyone’s quarter going?

jey, definitely continue being assertive… that’s what I had to do beginning of year (and I’m still doing it as well!!) haha.

this quarter will be bLLLLLLLAHHHHHHH
