Thoughts on Cambridge Hotels

D is attending Harvard inthe fall, and I am now looking at hotels inthe area. I have gone through Marite’s list (thank you very much, Marite), and I just did not realize how expensive hotels are in Boston.
I am now looking at the following:
La Quinta at Sommerville for 139/night
Doubletree Guest Suites for 179/night
Hotel@MIT for 179/night
I would appreciate your thoughts on the above, and would truly welcome suggestions.

Hotel @ MIT is very comfortable and nice. We’ve stayed there twice. The bedspreads have equations on them! The rate you quoted is good, as I’ve seen it much higher. The buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant was terrific. We also stayed at the Marriot Cambridge, which was very nice too. That hotel is at Kendall Square, which is right next to the T station. There’s a fun pub restaurant on the property…great for a late night meal. Have fun!

Take a look at Harding House and Irving House (same company) and A Friendly Inn. Also check out Beds& Breakfasts in Boston

Check out locations that are on the Red Line.

A few years ago, I stayed at Hawthorne Suites which is located at 1 Mass Ave., which is where Mass Ave. meets Rte. 16, the Alewife Brook Parkway. It is where Cambridge meets Arlington. Basically, it is driving up Mass Ave. from Harvard, away from the city…5 minutes or so. These are suites with a kitchen but also I recall a free breakfast buffet was included. I recall the rates being cheap at the time. The thing is, as with everything, rates go up. I just looked it up and found it at $179/night, though that is quite a bit more than I spent at the time to stay there. With free parking, it was one of the better deals at the time.

we always stay at the Burlington Marriott hotel a really great place to stay very well priced if you have a car (free parking) and about 10 min. to Cambridge.this is a full service hotel 2 restaurants, 2 pools in door and out very clean and elegant, priced between $99 to $169 a night. Our choice hotel for the last 4 years

Many thanks for the immediate replies. I forgot to mention that we are flying into Boston, and for everyone’s safety, I will not be driving. I am a big fan of public transportation.

Keep in mind that prices for popular dates (such as freshman enrollment dates) may be much more expensive. For example, H and I have stayed at Kendall Square Marriott numerous times for $179/night; for MIT graduation, it was $599/night. (We didn’t stay there for graduation. We went further afield, then cancelled our reservations entirely when S decided he wouldn’t attend graduation.)

You can always try priceline.

A Cambridge House B and B…

Just quickly book whatever you can get. Since Boston has more than 50 colleges in its area, and most college students are moving in at the same time, hotel rooms become very scarce and expensive at times like the beginning of the year.

It’s highly unlikely that small, relatively inexpensive places like the Iriving House, which has only a few rooms, will be available unless you have the extraordinary good luck to call just after a cancellation.

Great that you like public transportation. The system is wonderful particularly since Boston drivers are maniacs. Be careful when crossing the street. I think Boston drivers think of pedestrians as being prey.

If you are booking for move-in, also book parent’s weekend if you are going. Boston gets booked up well in advance for these weekends and graduation as well.

I really like the Holiday Inn Express and the Hampton Inn on O’Brien Highway – they’re within walking distance of the subway (Green Line, Lechmere Station), and they’re usually much less expensive than other hotels in the Boston area.

And my wedding is September 15 – just try for a second to imagine the absolutely absurd rates I was quoted as “group discounts” for a mid-September wedding in Boston.

We recently stayed at the Doubletree Suites. Nice place, very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely views of the Charles and the rowers. The hotel offers complimentary shuttle to Harvard Square and a few other places. It’s roughly across the river between MIT and Harvard. I would return. I think that $179 is not a bad price for that hotel.

We’ve also stayed at the Doubletree Suites numerous times – 2 adults and 2 teens. Crowded but it worked. In nice weather and if you have time, you can walk across the bridge to Harvard. It’s located on Soldier’s Field Road in Brighton.

I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts. Northstarmom, I followed your advice, and immediately made reservations at Hotel@MIT. That gives me time to think if I would rather stay at the Doubletree which probably has rooms with more space. Molliebatmit, best wishes. I once suggested to my daughter that she get married in the church that was used in “The Sound of Music”. A wedding in Cambridge seems like a really good idea as well.
