Thoughts on Econ./Int'l Area Studies Major?

Is anybody in this major currently? Is the “International Area Studies” aspect of it legit or relatively pointless?
Any thoughts appreciated…

I’m in premajor status for this major at the moment.

The “international area studies” aspect of the major is that you take four non-econ, social science electives having to do with the area you choose. They are from a wide variety of disciplines, including Anthropology, Geography, Sociology, Political Science, History, and whatnot.

Other than that it’s mostly an economics major. Other than the basic econ core classes (1, 2, 11, 41, 101, 102), you have to take Econ 103 (econometrics, not required for the regular econ major), Econ 121 (international trade), Econ 122 (international finance), and four econ electives (from two different econ fields…OR you can replace up to two of your econ electives with Management 120A, 120B, 130A, or 130B). You also take Econ 199B, which involves doing a research paper on the economy of a country or a region (in your chosen concentration).

You are also required to take two years of a language approved for your area of study, so I guess that adds to the “international area studies” aspect of it. This also happens to be the econ major that allows you to take the most units abroad.

You can take a look at the course load for this major either on the econ department website ([UCLA Department of Economics](http://www.econ.ucla.edu)) or on [url=Study Area - New Student Academic Programs]this page/url. It even lists some of the non-econ electives you can take under each concentration. You can look up course descriptions for these on the registrar website.
