Thoughts on Harvard-MIT institute program for High School Students?

My son wants to apply to a program on research and innovation that is hosted by a research institute that was created at MIT. Has anyone else’s kids participated in such programs and are they worth it? The tuition is a bit stiff at $4500 but they say it’s for an entire school term.

It is administered by the Institute for Technology & Global Health and its just [itgh dot org]
the program is the “Innovation & Society” program.

Is this affordable or is it coming out of his college budget? I’d start there.

Stretching to pay for a program like this isn’t always the “investment” you think it is. Your kid can likely gain the skills and the competencies at much lower cost (of course it will take more effort to line up a mentor and a project than it would to just write a check).

What’s the motivation for your kid- getting a leg up in admissions (it won’t) or the learning?

FWIW this is on MIT website about summer program and admissions

Thank you for sharing.

I also had a chat with a couple of former admissions counselors at some of these schools and their thoughts are that some of these programs can be valuable, not just because of the signals they send to colleges about the student, but in the right program, students could learn valuable skills they otherwise would not have obtained through their high school curricula and which could help them develop in other areas.

BUT you have to choose these programs wisely. They offered to look through the program I posted about and will share their thoughts. I’ll post here once they do, if they agree to it.
